best use of phaser EVER

i love this song, and it has the most amazing psychedelic phasing at the end where all of the instruments eventually get sucked in. i'm not a big fan of the phasing effect in general, but this shit is perfect!

oh, it starts around 2:20

It's tape flanging, syncing 2 tape recorders, then working the vari speed on one, or, pressing down the tape reel flange (hence the name).
Because one of the decks slips ahead AND behind in time there comes a point where a lot of frequencies cancel out and you get a very deep "dip" in the sound.

I wonder why it doesn't seem to work that well using dsp, I don't think I've ever heard a phaser plugin that really works as good as the old fashioned method, certainly not the Live one.

Nice tune btw.

A phaser creates its effect electronically using comb filters, so it sounds somewhat similar but technically and sonically it's not the same. There are "through zero" flanger plug-ins that delay the signal so the modulated path can be before and after in time relative to the other signal (go "through zero). The old school way of doing it has the benefit of being from tape going to tape again so obtaining more of the fat sounding tape distortion.

Guys, could you please add Artist and Song name when posting YouTube links?

More than often I can't open them because Sony is deleting every little bit of audio published by them or one of their many sublabels from German YouTube.
So I don't have a clue what track you guys are talking about right now.

Edit:
Also, YouTube doesn't even have the decency to display what exactly I'm not privileged to see. Which is, if you ask me, pure bitchiness.

PSP Nitro has a phaser built into it as well. In serial with a waveshaper or a multimode filter, it can do some neat stuff.

Wow, I totally expected the linked song to be some kind of tedious dirge-like "anthem" featuring all of the popular loops and a 909 kick, etc.

but instead it's Shuggie Otis - Strawberry Letter 23

Unexpectedly groovy baby.
