It all depends what you need as to whether it's better than Logic or Cubase etc.

It's certainly not better for plugins (synths or effects) although it includes quite a lot of reasonable effects (plus you get discounts on Stilwell's plugins which are often pretty good for the money). It's not better for MIDI, missing things such as Logical Editor and has no scoring (this is important for some people). It's also easy to tie yourself up in knots with the routing scheme and it has NO sound content at all, or sample player such as EXS24, Simpler/Sampler etc. and it can take a lot of messing around to get it running in a way you will like it. It also doesn't support VST3 yet. Cubase's convolution reverb and variaudio for example are two great tools in my workflow which I miss when using Reaper. (yes I could get Melodyne and Reverberate plugins and Kontakt but then it would cost slightly more ...)

On the plus side, it's the most customizeable/flexible DAW around, you can pretty much set it up to do anything, geeks can use the scripting to adjust plugins and write their own, You can set up amazing custom templates and colour anything the way you want, it's a light install (5MB) and seems to run vst 2.x plugins (the majority of plugins) better than anything else, with noticeably more capacity for adding plugins and tracks than some of the more established competition. To me, Reaper is a bit like a box full of electronics you put together DIY style to make something for yourself, as opposed to a ready made package. If you love tweaking things and being a control freak to make the DAW you like best in your image, it works well, if you're a lazy assed person who likes inbuilt synths and FX and mixers with EQ channels already on them like Samplitude or Cubase, it's a bit of an adjustment.

No arguments on the price or the power of Reaper though - outstanding.

Ableton used to be the good guys who played fair and understood the value of loyal customers.

Then they started opening New York offices, collabing with anyone under the sun, rush releasing product without properly testing it and stuck it to their people by upping prices, scrapping educational upgrade discounts and communicating less on the boards and through the media from their Ivory Towers ;)
