PING - iTunes 10. Yet another social networking site.

Post by ChiDJ » Thu Sep 02, 2010 2:54 pm

Now that Ping has been released, I'm wondering how much more time I will have to spend creating yet another artist pageas well as maintain and promote it.

Will it be worth it?

While it might be disturbing to some that iTunes is adopting facebook type functionality, it's probably the first place the average person looks to buy your music with single click quickness. So if you have music on there it's probably worth some effort.

Just read an article about this yesterday on Wired.com

Interesting perspective. Haters always be hatin', but whatever. They're going to make a fortune.

"Apple audaciously seems to think the world actually needs another social network — one that you even need special software to be part of, to boot. With the introduction Wednesday of ‘Ping,” a music-centered community that exists only within iTunes, they are probably right — and then some."

Read the article and, maybe it is just me, but what are they offering that is truly essential or new? It skips over points. My main concern is how does it benefit artists? Obvs there is the plus of fans being instantly able to buy tracks but why would they migrate from Faceballs and what of the issue of Apple paying very little in royalties compared to other retailers? It's alright for Lady Gaga as someone else pointed out but we're not all her.

Really I don't know how this whole thing works yet and all, but like I said most people hit iTunes first to buy music (I'm saying the non-musician/DJ civilian). Right off the top of my head I'm thinking it would be useful if somebody is there already to buy your music and it also displays your show/tour dates. Otherwise that's another google search that will inevitably toss them to myspace. They might not even be interested in doing that extra search and checking for live dates, but if the dates are already there while buying the music then they might actually go check out a show.

Now that I really think about it, I don't know why anybody on here would be against it. Myspace and facebook is about self important individuals and there just so happens to be a musical option to those sites. iTunes is about music (tv shows, movies, apps) and when people hit iTunes they're already in that zone so why not give them more in depth information and interaction at the same time?

Exactly, and yet they'll still try to get us little guys to buy into it thinking we're going to get exposure when really they're probably just trying to reel us in as users
