the "cool story bro' me" thread

Post by mikemc » Fri Nov 26, 2010 4:45 am

A couple of weeks back, I was having a conversation with someone in a small room, and my hearing in one ear got muffled, and the other ear started to ring. It happened again the week after that. Then, one day I was driving along and I started to cough. I started to cough and got lightheaded to the point where I almost passed out! Whilst I was driving, so this concerned me.

I went to a specialist, an otolarynologist, and they tested my hearing. One ear was different than the other (less sensitivity in the higher frequencies than the other). This is, apparently, unusual. It was unusual enough for the dr. to order an MRI. So I had that taken. Maybe I have an "aooustic neuroma", which is a sort of brain tumor! Or, maybe some other more pernicious brain tumor! Or, maybe it is nothing!

Holy moly, hope you turn out ok Mike. You'd be in my prayers if I was down like that, but you'll be in my thoughts.

If you are at this point in any diagnosis, you need to just step away from the ledge.
When the MRI comes back and somebody with an expensive education and people skills like a childkiller has a look at them, then you can start to worry (or not).

What usually happens in this circumstance is they say "hmm, we can't see anything unusual, so um, well, take some [brand name painkiller / anti-psychotic] and come back in a month"

that's what happens in about 98% of cases.
try and chill until then, because if shit does go bad, you will look back on this time as the "happy time".
trust me on this one. Seize the day.

:?: ^ do you mean good luck to me healthwise, or good luck to loops in his quest to scarf up the gear of the dead?? :)

thanks for the kind words/thoughts/riveting tale..."/etc.

@Angstrom, yes, the dr. said that the tests come back negative in all but 2% of the cases, so you're exactly right there. I'm really thinking it is nothing, more like congestion/sinus stuff, but it was weird the way my hearing did what it did the times that it went wonky on me.

I have something similar going, where my left ear is constantly popped; every now and then, it's like it goes away, and for
a few minutes, it's the hearing equivalent of watching the 3D version of Avatar WITH the 3D glasses, whereas you're watching
the same version WITHOUT the glasses the rest of the time... My tinnitus doesn't go away, but those moments are pretty sweet.

I get the "lightheadedness" from time to time, too. I'm not necessarily saying it's the same thing, but you might want to get
your blood sugar levels checked; mine turned out to be shockingly low, and the doctor said I should be glad I wasn't passing
out on a daily basis. Again: I have no reason to claim that there's even a link between my ear-related problems and my
blood sugar levels, but what you described did remind me a lot of my own condition.

that is a drag. The ringing I had was temporary.

But I am relieved, he results from the MRI came back 'normal', which is good: no growths where they shouldn't be.

Got some medicine for congestion/cough, so the coughing/almost passing out thing that was freaking me out hasn't happened. Might just be sinuses.

Sooner or later somebody on this forum has to die. I have no doubt some of us will still be posting on here while under hospice care with 3 hours left on the clock.
