I don't know if there's a similar saying in English, but in Germany we use to say: "Besser gut geklaut als schlecht selber gemacht.", something like "a good rip-off is better than a bad self-attempt".

By the way, I hate that saying, as much as I hate the advertising industry. Good money sometimes, though.
