Live shows are for the unemployed and irresponsible

Post by beats me » Fri Aug 05, 2011 7:03 pm

Like many of you here I like mid tier acts. Meaning they are most likely playing clubs as opposed to stadiums. Also meaning they are most likely playing on a week night instead of the weekend. Also meaning they aren’t going on until midnight at the earliest.

Meaning I’m not going because I have work in the morning. :x

Near the nucleus of 2 mile Palooza Crowd + Tourists = can't wait to get the fizzle out of hizzle.
I'll see the Beetroots where they're really playing...

i feel ya, although its a little easier up here in SF cuz i can just hop in a cab and be home in 5 minutes. i also walk to work now, so i can sleep till 8 and (literally) stumble in at 9. i figure 6 hours is enough, so, by that math, as long as i'm home by 2am and not blackout drunk, work won't be too bad the next day.

before my current pad, i lived out by ocean beach in the richmond district, which is basically a subburb of SF. going to a show either meant driving or paying $25 each way for a cab, and then a 45 minute bus ride in the morning. i never made it to shows then.

Very nice. Being close to work is a huge plus to living imo. Some people takes 2 hour to commute to downtown.
That's an extra 4 hours a day committed to work. Granted, were I in that position and had an MBP to work on music, I'd feel justified. But that's an extra 20 HOURS a week of lost living. I take my free time seriously, even when I plan on doing nothing

this is a lament damn it!!

what good is bitching if you don't say the same thing 12 times 6 different ways?!

fucking booking agents ruining the night life
lame headliners stealing all the good time slots
favorite artists in town on the most inconvenient nights
etc.

I think my original statement covered the spirit of it all.

But I will add that the only thing worse than finding out your favorite mid tier artist is playing a week night show is finding out they’re playing at an outdoor amphitheater like the Shoreline where your two options are sit on the nose bleed grass at a 45 degree angle or sit in the front theater style seating where rocking out or dancing is logistically difficult and looks retarded.

I'd rather go to the week night club show and risk losing my job. :x

What if you had enough notice that you could let your boss know you might be a little late the next day?
There's a couple RSS feeds that are helpful for posting events, one is the last.fmm events app or something like that, bandsintown is another one, there's another one I can't hink of but they are pretty helpful; usually 2 months notice.

At my age there’s no going late into work the next day after a late show. I’m just not going in. I have vacation and sick days I can use for that which is fine but it’s really annoying when EVERY artist I might be interested in seeing is doing an after midnight week night show.

Big plus of being self employed is being able to tell customers you'll be in a bit late. From my perspective the worst part is that half my friends are in married/old nesting mode (agoraphobic is more like it IMO ) so getting them to tag along is dammed near impossible. :x

i feel ya on that.

my favorite places around here to watch a show are the Fillmore and the Independent... if anyone you like is ever playing The Fox Theatre in Oakland that is the perfect venue. If you leave to get a drink there's never a line (1 or 2 peeps) because they staff the place right. you'll be back so fast your friends might not even notice you're gone. every seat is a good seat and the floor is huge. i highly recommend it. for me i get the added bonus of being 10 minutes away...
