the penultimate boombox thread that will save the lounge

Post by docprosper » Mon Sep 19, 2011 8:01 pm

So I'm in the market for a boombox. I basically have everything else I need in life. I'm minimizing my DJ set down to a laptop, faderfox, and Launchpad and need a portable sound system to go with it. Please don't respond with your helpful tips until you watch the following inspirational video just so you know what I'm going for:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yvEYKRF5IA

Requirements:
- Super loud
- Retro ghetto-blaster look
- internal iPod dock
- long life for portable dj sets
- turbo bass

Preferable:
- Cassette Player (for my Pure Acid Mixtapes collection)
- Available in US
- Plays sounds and music

Not required:
- CD player

All I've seen so far that looks good is the Lasonic i931 Ghetto Blaster, Meth has one so that should mean something and it takes 10 D Cells which seems right proper as well.

Well? Thoughts? Is there something out there bigger? Do I need my own handshake or can I use the batwing one?!?

Looks solid... Is that a woofer on the side? Nice player, but I need something that screams 80s ghetto blaster. Srsly guys, it's either this or back to that other miserable fucking thread. Surely starving student has something to offer?

I like the OP one, but the rest look feminine or nerdy. Ok, that JVC Kaboom seems pretty cool, if you don't want to stick with the classic look. I bet it bumps.

I ebayed ghettoblaster

I like the one ending in 7 minutes but that's a bye-bye. I think the price of the Lasonic is too low that it makes me think it has poor battery life and low...wattage.

I would get a bigger vintage one so it can at least bump sounds and then mod it for the ipod so you can play music using a midi player app  .

bear in mind that old boomboxes are pre- mobile phones, so they don't block the interference noise.
sucks if you're hooking up an iphone to it. that shit is LOUD.
and good luck asking everyone to put their phones in airplane mode at your party... :x

I was thinking of the ipod, not the iphone. I don't think many would want give up their phone + the possibility calls and notifications would come in while using it as their player.

I suppose it wouldn't be as simple as being able to wire an interference blocker in the connections somewhere?

That second one is hella dope; definitely boss level stuff with the keyboard but not enough ghetto blast for my needs. Inspirational stuff.

If you're okay with a more modern look, then the TDK ones look EXCELLENT:

The JVC Kaboom seems like a decent mix between old and new, though I'm not crazy about the look:

EDIT: Interesting article on the TDKs http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/152 ... ategy.html
I think your first link is to the one I've been eyeing already; I'm just a little worried given the price and Lasonic's total lack of information on their website. I'd love to hear from someone who has one. Totally agree on the JVC, it screams "I coach cheerleaders".

build your own

50+ hours runtime, ipod dock, charges phones and super loud with BASS.

I'm in the process of building a new version of my boombox. Actually considering building bespoke boombox's to order. They won't be cheap but they will be the best portable soundsystem imaginable.

You should add an arcade button on the top to activate a dub siren.

That's a really do-able suggestion. Martin i really don't see any way you couldn't do it. Except maybe you might want a secret disable switch for it because somebody will probably think it's a great idea to use it every second beat.
