The new gmail. Yuck.

Post by beats me » Wed Nov 02, 2011 3:38 am

Google is obviously trying to steal from the Jobs "elegant simplicity" playbook. But just because something is simplistic doesn't mean it's elegant, as the new gmail proves. I also expect Microsoft to also miss the mark by a mile on this concept in future releases.

I like it a LOT more than the old version to be honest, I think it's way cleaner.

Looked fairly terrible with the theme I was using (mountains, which was nice with the old look), but I quite like it with a more minimal theme.

Just tried a bunch of the new themes. Most of them made my eyes want to immediately pack up and move out of my head. Abysmal. Pure dreck. After wasting 15 minutes looking at the most uninspired "HD" images I've seen all day, I went back to my boring old Tree theme. The other layout and graphical improvements are classically dull, and unworthy of comment. My first choice for email will continue to be Gmail, it's just a shame that I have to look at it.

As an alternative I recommend the Sparrow application, although I'm sure some will scoff at the idea of buying an app to view free email.

I don't mind it, there are some design decisions they made that I would have done differently, but I've been using Gmail since it was invite only, and it's a whole hell of a lot better now than it was in 04. Everyone bitching about design/feature changes on web services--starting petitions, groups, whatever else--then ceasing to give a shit after 15 minutes is such a tired meme at this point that it's barely worth addressing.

Sparrow's great, but I wish the label handling was a bit better (I've got over a dozen email accounts, mostly Gmail/GApps, with hundreds of labels in aggregate).

At this point I deal with 90%+ of email on my Nexus S/iPad anyway, I can't remember the last time I opened Sparrow or any other mail client.

Hasn't changed for me yet, guess I should count myself lucky?

If it's anything like the new Reader then I dread it. Not only is it ugly but it's buggy as hell.

It doesn't change automatically. You have to click on something to tell it to change.

So in that reguard, no, you aren't lucky.

As long as there's something about it that makes it better than the previous version, I'll adjust. So far, I haven't really noticed anything of the sort, though.

Whatever. :| Hey, wait! That doesn't look "neutral" at all! I'm NEUTRAL! Not sad!

Ah, what the hell: :x

You can change the message density in the settings.
