i hate the thought of defending coldplay, but there was a moment, before they became so known, when they seemed genuine and quite original and good...now the coldplay commercial juggernaut is in full effect and its become so vanilla so anyone will 'like' it..but its unlistenable

talking about pros and home producers in the same breath really is like apples and oranges...they are pros, superstars, who stick their necks out, and when they stick them out too far its up to the public to chop em off, lol

i judge bands/artists on how well the perform live (on snl for example,or youtube concert vids, i dont get to too many concerts out here), i think it is a good way to separate the wheat from the chaff considering, as well all know, how much can be fixed on the computer...

by that standard i would say chris brown is truly terrible in all respects, lady gaga also, beyonce, coldplay (fekkn terrible on snl), jayZ, some others i forget rt now...

but true talents, real musicians, i would say black keys, radiohead, wilco, pearl jam, decemberists, the roots, broken bells (yes very pop i know, but they can play), bunch more will come to me...

all opinion of course, except the part about chris brown, that is fact, lol

From my limited viewing on Chris Brown, doesn't he pretty much want to be a cross section between Kanye and Michael Jackson?
I don't see anything other than emulation.
------------------------------------------
Then, I came across a couple YT vids of Drake that just showed lyrics, so I decided to look up more lyrics and I was wondering why he seemed to be so highly regarded, because I didn't see him saying fuck all about anything in general or different from what's already out there; just the usual, I'm the shit, I got hoes, I love you girl, I fly the world, I get high, best car, plane, etc.
It seemed like he was supposed to be one of the "different" rappers who had something positive and meaningful to say, I guess I shouldn't be surprised at this point.

In context, my work surroundings are pretty afrocentric so when Drakes album came out a 1 or 2 years ago it was like people were excited to read a newly found undiscovered book of the bible.

Point taken for Chris Brown, I still think he can sing and dance, which puts him ahead of drake and kanye in my book.

As for Britney: I truly believed she was a talented singer and performer back in the day, but of late, I can't seem to admit she is a talented artist with her little army of minions producing her tracks. I mean of course, she has the resources to do so but that doesn't determine her quality does it? That's like saying she has money so its not her fault. In other words, she can afford it so why not? Fuck that, the whole "Let's throw money at a situation until it gets better," just doesn't impress me.

As for Lady Gaga, I absolutely hate how popular she is, but you have got to give her credit for composing her own tunes, and knowing the exact fucking formula for fame. I mean, she was one of Spear's minions for a while before she said, eff this. I can do it better. And from a popularity standpoint, I think she did. Even people that hate Lady gaga know her music.

I think I have stated my opinion too much already in this discussion, but I do enjoy hearing where everybody stands on this stuff, I am glad we are actually discussing music for once ; )

The exact fucking formula. It's not that complicated.
We've had 60 years of pop radio to perfect and rehash the chords and arrangements to know what works.
Ability to play a little? Check.
Ability to sing? Check.
Ability to dance? Check.
Controversial topics? Check.
Controversial fashion? Check.
Hot looks? eh. The fashion covers it up.
Lyrics with a balance of being poetic but understable? Probly.
A team of specialists in those fields to help her out? Check.
Vengeance? Check.

It ain't brain surgery. I got no hate for Gaga, I think I'm just desensitized because of history. We've already had our Bowies and Alice Coopers and Madonnas. The only thing to raise the bar is how extreme things can get. And that comes down to visuals, because everything's already been said and played, at least on a level accessible to the masses to make it a mainstream success. I like that she doesn't sound like a pretentious prick when she answers questions. I like how she explains what's going with stuff she does instead of copping out and saying "Well, it's up to you to figure out". But when I hear this stuff that's supposed to be groundbreaking and enlightening it's really just hype and lack of age. Kids relate more to re-hashes than originals because it's happening in their time and more widespread. It's an unfortunate bias.

Please leave Bowie out of this unless you want to revel in his utter brilliance. Look what he did with Brian Eno versus what Coldplay did with Brian Eno. Apples and Oranges. I even think Madonna is different because she had such a well known participation in the decisions and business dealings of her franchise.

Since when did Britney not have an army of minions producing her tracks, let alone directing and controlling most aspects of her career? Ever since her childhood days at Disney, she's been the epitome of a very carefully groomed and well maintained pop star.

Okay, Cooper and Madonna are not Olympian like Bowie, but he's a prime example of an innovator that others like Gaga emulate and strive to be like.

Completely understood.

And the Madonna thing, as far as I understand, when she started writing her stuff, she already had great knowledge musicially and was technically in depth with the synths, I think maybe in my mind as more of a DIY'er than having this huge fucking insider musical/fashion ensemble Gaga seemed to get, but you know on the other hand maybe I have a big misperception of it.

Maybe this was always the case, I guess it was just less obvious back in the early 2000's. I am just not as familiar with her production team then as I am now.

The point is, this method doesn't impress me from an artist's point of view. Lady Gaga does because she has so much more control of her franchise AND she writes her own fucking shit. This is more than can be said of a large majority of today's "popular" artists so already I am in her favor. I admit, she is adhering to the formula which is, as already pointed out, not that complicated, but she is the one who is writing her own music, and she doesn't have to credit a laundry list of composers at the end of every album. Producers? Yes, but let's face it, I can't see Gaga hitting the mixing decks late at night to finish her album.
