Is it a good time to get a MacBook Pro ?

Post by LoopStationZebra » Fri Mar 02, 2012 11:33 pm

Well, lads. My MacBook is dying. It keeps restarting. 2007 model. Logic board, no doubt. I figure it's past due for a new one.

But...is it the right time? Where's that website that talks about best refresh times?

As always with computers, if you really need a new one right now (and sounds like you do) go for it. MBPs are about mid cycle right now, so it'll probably still be a while before a lineup refresh. Apple is holding an event the 7th, but it seems to be focused on the new iPad. If they don't have new macs news, I'd go for a new laptop now.

Logic board died in warranty on my 2007 macbook pro.
Five years is long enough. The new ones are roughly 2.5 times faster, so it's a real improvement.

Yep definitely after the 7th, but it's not likely that new macbook pros are announced.
Geekbench is always your friend.

Now is not the time. First wait to see which one of the 9 versions of Windows 8 might better fit your needs before you buy another Mac.

You're asking us for Apple advise?

Has the world gone mad?

Everything always seems a bit different when you wake up saturday morning. Like something doesn't quite fit. Is it possible to drink so much on a friday night that you can fall through the fabric of space-time into a parallel universe?

I think I'll go back to bed for a bit.

When I get back, I expect this thread to look normal.

Have Microsloth really announced there will be 9 versions? Amazing...you;d think in the 21st century we'd be looking to consolidate OSes, HW platforms and such to make it easier for the user.

I've been doing hardware design in the computer industry for 31 years and am embarassed at the products that get foisted on users who deserve much better.

I know, right? As much of a fanboy as I am, lately I haven't been following the refresh rates for the MacBooks. Besides, it's always good to solicit opinions here. :)

Tnx for the info, chaps. It looks as though next month there will at least be a slight design change to make the MBPs even thinner. Hmm. I'm gonna take my MB into the Apple store for a quick diagnostic. If its a logic board, I'll get a refurb and install it myself to tide me over a bit longer. If, next month, there is indeed a new body style I'll pick up a 15".

Next release will be a first gen redesign, could be a great one, but I would not go first gen.
I have the 2011 and it's a great machine, but the thunderbolt is disappointingly half baked.

Isn't the redesign purely cosmetic? With the exact same components as the current 2011?

I think it is supposed to incorporate the "ivy bridge" processor

Doh, that's a lot to think about then.... Makes no sense to get something now when this refresh will offer new benefits at roughly the same price point and existing design gets a tad cheaper.

Same old story, but the timing could only be weeks away.
