Times have changed. Today the question for parents is "it's 10am, do you know where your children are?"

I thought this was a nice part of the question. IMHO until you learn to read a crowd, which not everyone can do or are interested in doing with depth, then you'll have to use your own reaction to the music as the litmus test regarding pacing elements. Which means you'll have to be dancing in your head, so you'll need music that makes you want to move (I know duh obvious). Some dj's can seemingly put themselves completely in the shoes of people dancing but I don't see that skill much these days (in the underground) where it's more about performance. I always ending up playing for myself with some concessions for everybody in the crowd, some concessions for my fellow techy trainspotters and just hope they like my taste. Knowing what people really need to hear is a real skill, you might get it some nights when you click with a crowd but it's a rare spinner that can do it effectively every time or is actually really interested in what the crowd wants rather than what they think the crowd needs. Performers tend to look down a little on entertainers, different paths with different hassles and rewards.
