Fixed. Mike had a decent list, but he seems to be having sequel confusion.

Not mentioned so far but worthy of note:

Sunshine - ridiculous concept, but loads of style and atmosphere.
Solaris - I liked the Clooney version, shockingly

Be interesting to see if The Hunger Games becomes a much respected classic series by the end of the 4th film.

If they can keep to the big political themes which sometimes get lost in teen romance treacle they could be on to a winner.

I liked it too. I think Steven Soderberg is a good director.

Also - I just want to mention 'Communion' because I saw it recently and this is an opportunity to vent my opinion to the ether.

I think it is possibly worth watching if you have the time to waste just for the sheer bewilderment of seeing Christopher Walken in that utterly bizarre role in a truly weird movie. The aliens are puppets. The whole thing is 90 odd minutes of sheer 'WTF?'.

I was shocked by how much I enjoyed this movie. I was fully expecting a Twilight teen angst piece of shit, but instead got something that was very watchable.

Hopefully in the next one we'll get to see the chick's cans.

Moon was top notch and a welcome return to that 1970s more 'thoughtful' approach to scifi.

This is a tough one... I guess maybe not necessarily the best movies... but here are my favorites.

Total Recall
RoboCop 1-2
Aliens
Blade Runner
Terminator 2
Because Whatever.

You know ... this whole computer musician — sci-fi connection makes a lot of sense, and goes a long way to explain why so many of us get so excited every time a new, shiny controller is released; why we keep buying more gear with lots of blinking lights even though our workspace is already cluttered with stuff we never use:

We've realised it's the closest we'll ever get to flying a starship.

Anyway:

1. Stalker
2. Alien
3. The Empire Strikes Back
4. Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (the '70s version)
5. The Day the Earth Stood Still

Come on, it is universally acclaimed - and the sound design alone should make it a favourite here!
agreed. very well done... in some ways it puts the acting in many of the other movies we've listed to shame.
beatmunga wrote:(PS The whole Star Wars franchise doesn't count. It is set in a very distant past, has supernatural forces as the centrepiece of it's story, and is therefore a Sword and Sandals/Fantasy epic with particularly exotic locations and alternative technology. No more Sci Fi than Lord of the Rings

disagree

sci-fi = science fiction. the time line is irrelevant as is the mysticism... the technology and location (among the stars) is what make it science fiction.

the thing SW has in common with LOTR is that it is another retelling of the hero's journey... which pretty much covers any movie that has any kind of epic scale about it. those parallels can be drawn in all types of tales throughout history... they're not just limited to films and fiction.
