Mark my words, video games will surpass film as the preferred medium for creating engaging works of visual fiction. Why sit and watch the story when you can become the story?
never!

I love computer games, but they always descend into sheer bloody violence and the story falls by the way side. Probably my favourite game is Star Wars Knights of the old republic (the first one) because it was more like the role playing game than a shooter. Even their new MMOR version doesn't live up to it. It's epic but I still get bored with it because most of the time is spend fighting monsters.

The Thing is scifi. It's not horror. It's HORRIFYING, but not horror.

:x

It's got an alien. A spaceship. Scifi.

Always? Guess you haven't check out Dishonored. You can get through the entire game without killing a single person and the gameplay and narrative change to reflect choices like that. One of the most daring games I've played in a while.

Incidently, the Campbell short story that The Thing is based on - Who Goes There - is fucking spectacular. Carpenter really captured much of the main plot and elements, but the short story is arguably more creepy - more claustrophobic. There's some fascinating shit about the alien that didn't show up in the film.... Very cool.

The only video game worth playing is Call of Duty Zombies.

Balls to the wall zombie killing. No fucking horrid plot and acting to get in the way.

Game devs have been promising just that kind of experience for 10 years.

They're still all SHIT in terms of plot, acting, immersion experience.

I mean the fucking dialogue in all these games....omfg.

You're playing the wrong games then mofo. All of the Assassin's Creed games have had *excellent* voice acting and storytelling. Same for the Mass Effect games.

Jesus you're going to name off Call of Duty as your example of the industry trying to go for plot, acting and immersion? 8O

I definitely think that some video games have story lines on par with some of the best movies, Mass Effect as mentioned being a great example. The Dead Space games are great like that too, I'd put those right up there with Alien in terms of pucker factor.

But yeah, I too like just chilling and watching a good movie, letting the film take me on a ride. I know I'll get flack for it, but the most immersive experience I've had yet was Avatar in 3D. The 3D was just so well done, and with everything else in terms of story and music, I personally found it really easy to get lost in that movie. Not everyone's thing, and I haven't seen a 3D movie yet that was anywhere close to that, but I thought it was cool at the time.

Dune and Primer is mentioned, and those are some of my favorites too
Ah, a fellow Zardoz admirer! Definitely closer to my taste in Sci-Fi. Event Horizon has some of my favorite spaceship interiors ever. Dark City is in my top 10 films of all time list.

No  required. It's a great remake with a fantastic score.
Forge. wrote:Also - I just want to mention 'Communion'

I think it is possibly worth watching if you have the time to waste just for the sheer bewilderment of seeing Christopher Walken in that utterly bizarre role in a truly weird movie. The aliens are puppets. The whole thing is 90 odd minutes of sheer 'WTF?'.
Highly enjoyable!

Bro. I don't do the regular Call of Duty. Only Zombie mode. There's no running plot or bad acting or CHOICES TO BE MADE NOW THAT WILL AFFECT YOU LATER WHEN THE PLOT GETS WORSE AND THE STORY MORE FUCKING RIDICULOUS.

It's killing zombies. End of story.
