Has there ever been an artist that’s released a great album and then was quiet for like 5+ years and the album was actually worth the wait?

I was previewing No Doubt’s new album yesterday (I’ll say up front, never a big fan) and with trying to keep an open mind it still sounded meh to me. The reviews seemed divided between disappointment and those who would think it’s great no matter what they spit out, the whole instant 5 star “FINALLY!!” reviews.

More bias: I think Ska is one of the worst soulless genres ever invented. :x

Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms" - after that they were absolutely fucking awful and not just Dire.

They should have been called Rubbish Straits.

mercury rev's first album - 'yerself is steam' is monumental, they then released a few more albums which were reasonable but then they went quiet for a bit and after a few years came up with 'deserter's songs', another masterpiece

Andain (topped with Beautiful Things in 2003) recently released their debut album here in 2012. It's pretty good. Not blowing me away in terms of production value, but not disappointing either. At least it doesn't sound like yet another sylenth1 fest.
