geeks and girls...

Post by re:dream » Sun Apr 14, 2013 4:36 pm

I am getting the odd feeling that there's only guys on this forum.

Am I wrong?

I know this is the internet, and no-one knows if you're a dog, but having been around a couple of forums in my time, I am getting the odd feeling that around 50% of the human race might not be represented on this forum. If you get my meaning.

Am I mistaken? Is the international order of knob tweakers really as exclusively male as it appears? And if so, why?

Just wondering...

It is weird that there is a gender balance problem in music tech, it's not like you need to be a big strong man to do any of this stuff. Any women that have expressed an interest in live when they've seen me gig have talked themselves out of trying it, mainly citing that it looks too complicated, which is bull.
I do however think that the software gui is very masculine, grey and black, with strong lines.
Hopefully the pastel shades of push will not be as off putting.

surely we are missing out on some great music if these perfectly capable people dont give themselves the chance to try.

Yes, not a lot of women out there in the world of electronic music.

After Laurie Anderson, who else is there? I know of Souki out in Berlin, but she's pretty damn obscure. who else?

And where are the girls who *should* be making electronic music? Out there dating jocks? Havin kids? It's a tragedy, that's what it is.

Rarely there is a girl that ventures into an internet message board, but when they do...

This is the common response towards at least one dude.

Nice article.

So is the over-representation of men in electronic music just a general reflection of sexism & patriarchy in music?

Or is there something about tweaking, um, knobs, that causes an additional amount of self (de) selection?

space, love is my favourite track but the whole album is excellent

saw her supporting massive attack a few years ago at the south bank, big video screen with cameras zoomed in on her hands flying around the mixing desk, nice

solex is bloody good too :
