i hate how everyone is talking about how they re-defined EDM, how they got back to basics, etc, etc... even they on (now several) recent interviews are talking about that.

but no one is talking about the music itself. The melodies, how good they are, the feeling, the harmonics...

IMO, there are not good songs. The effort on re-defining the scene is 100% OK --- it's their opinion after all and their view on music. But MUSIC ITSELF, Random Access Memories ITSELF, isn't as good as i hoped.

and i dont even know if the word "itself" exists, english is not my native languaje, haha.

Yes, this is pretty much how it sounds like on a good sound system too... :?

I've only heard Get Lucky so far and before I knew it was DP I thought it was a decent funk band, BUT...

I'm wondering how the album might sound if
1. The expectations weren't high
2. you try to forget it's DP

Ever had times when you forgot about an album or download and heard it later not remembering it or knowing who it was and being curious about it?
How about hearing something in a different state of mind, even just with a beer buzz?
First couple times I heard Midnite Vultures I was pretty underwhelmed, hoping I'd hear more stuff like New Pollution. Lo and behold, in the right place and right time, it clicked and became an all time classic.

I'm just thinking maybe the album is better after a nice buzz and you're not holding any expectations or thinking that it's DP.
I'm saying this objectively since I'm not interested in it very much. Or maybe it's just meh. Probably.

I think its a great album. I dont think its a great daft punk album.

Still, I think we need stuff thats a bit less electronic at the moment. And it delivers that quite well.

I think it’s hard to decide when you’re streaming an entire album. It’s rare when a new album is meant to be played as a journey in its entirety. With Daft Punk I just want to revisit single tracks to decide how many I like and which ones.

I think it's a smashing mix between funky instrumentals and some Daft Punk vocoders. I don't really care how it relates to earlier albums.

I listened to it again last night. I found myself in that odd position where I was impressed at what a departure some of the tracks were but then realized that if it wasn’t Daft Punk I probably wouldn’t like them as much. Like if it was an artist I never heard before I would probably hit the skip button with a quickness on some of the tracks.

Yep. If this didn't say 'Daft Punk' on the tin most people talking about it wouldn't even care.

I don't get the mentality myself, even when my favorite artists make a shitty album I still think its shitty. Is it really that hard for people to listen to music free from predetermination and judge it solely on what is being heard? :|

Not saying the Daft Punk album is 'shitty' necessarily. I'd take it over a Skrillex or Deadmau5 album anyday. The chances of it getting more than 1 or 2 plays in my car is slim though. Its just not anything im interested in regardless of how I feel about Daft Punk. It sounds like something that could have been made in the 80's. There is a reason why ive gravitated towards electronic music over the last few decades...its because I like electronic music. I still see plenty of progression, but maybe that's because I don't listen to one genre pop EDM acts. If people are so sick of stagnation they really need to expand their palate.

...oh yeah, and if I see any more rants by commercial EDM acts complaining about commercialization I am going to start re-enacting scenes from the movie "Falling Down".

This is probably the first album I've listened to repeatedly and analyzed in a long time and I'm not even a Daft Punk fanatic.

I agree that even your favorite artist can put out a shitty album and I don't believe in music that is hard listening or forcing yourself to like it, but I don't think that is the case here. The new Daft Punk album isn't hard listening or even a bad album really. It's just very different for Daft Punk. There's still some winners in there.

The other funny thing is I remember Daft Punk back when Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, and Crystal Method were at their peak but didn't think Daft Punk was on as high of a level as those other groups, But if any of those other groups released a new album I don't think it would get anywhere near the attention and buzz this new Daft Punk album is getting.

Music from the 80s still has that "old" and "dry" sound compared to modern music that emulates the 80s. Is that just me? I'm not talking about loudness, but things like stereo imaging, layering and sound effects; they sound so much better than they used to.

And by the way, Deadmau5's latest album is actually pretty good.

:x

I posted this over at gearslutz... For the most part, I appreciate RAM as an experiment, but am just not really into it. I think those who've said it sounds like Steely Dan making a disco record are pretty spot on.

To me, their attempt to "bring life back to music" by using more acoustic recordings was a good concept, but the implementation just sounds too cheesy and dated/old without brining anything else to the table. They do nothing to distinguish this album from stuff recorded in the late-70s/early-80s. Some will cite this as cool and true to their inspirations/concept, which is fair enough, but not something that I'll care to listen to after a month. Playing armchair Freud (which is utterly speculative, and probably not fair), it seems like they've finally bought too much of their own hype IMO.

I wouldn't automatically wrote off their next move though, but I hope it's something that's more exciting/emotional/bold/cutting edge/etc.

Show me an 70/80s album that sounds as contemporary as RAM. Not by their own 70/80s standards, but by today's standards. My own collection of older "semi-electronic" music definitely sounds vastly inferior to modern productions.
