What do you do for a living?

Post by Theo Void » Sat Jun 22, 2013 12:14 am

I'm quite certain this has been asked here before, but I find it to be an interesting topic. People love talking about themselves and I'm always curious to see what fellow music makers actually do for a living.

In a perfect world we'd all be making hit records w/ __________ (whoever the fuck is famous these days.)

I'd also like to know just how many of us here actually do music/sound related things for a living. I DJ at shows occasionally. I love it but at this point there's no way I could live off of it. Yes, I've been making music since I was just a young cricket and I am now 29. I've accepted that my dreams of being a rock star are not going to happen but I still make music because it's what I LOVE to do.

I'm not really jaded and miserable because I actually enjoy my day job and it affords me enough time and $$$ to live a comfy life while still being able to enjoy the things I love such as music and technology.

Just wanna see where everyone is at. I'll start. I'm an adolescent drug and alcohol counselor.

I was a kick ass engineer for years. Big acts, lots of money, incredible recording stuff.

Now, I mix at home ITB and take care of my Uncle which requires changing his colostomy bag and other geriatric trappings.

I'm becoming much more of an artists these days. It's all poop and music for me. 8)

Thanx. He's my boy. I saved his life twice. Brought him back to health each time which required months of special diet and walking.

Now he's thriving and about to settle into a cool spot with RN's. Own room, bath, sunny backyard and a chihuahua that cleans his nose.

Best thing i've ever done in my life. 2.5 years of that. Looks like i'll be getting mine back in weeks. Indescribable feeling really. Cheers

That's really awesome man! I give you mad props for your sacrifice. I had an aunt who had diabetes and was a double amputee that I used to kick it with all the time. I didn't live w/ her and totally take care of her like you do but I went out of my way and spent a TON of time hanging out with her at her house and helping out. You're right, it does feel good.

You un-doubtedly have loads of good KArma in the bank!!!!

Good man. Gotta help fam and let em know everything will be ok. Lets face it tho, not all fam is help-able. But when it works, it's powerful. He did everything I asked him to do. Thanx for the support. Yeah, I think i just might have a nice account going. :)

What kind of idiot sees an adolescent for drink and drugs counseling? Someone looking to do more?

I'm an Engineer. I like the variety. I get to design stuff on a computer, play with hazardous equipment in a lab and occasionally beat the crap out of things with a big hammer.

And another props to knotkranky. I'd like to think I could do the same (not entirely sure though).

I manage a research institute at a university. Raising money, writing funding proposals, and protecting my people from the idiocy of University and Department of Higher Education bureaucrats. 8) The research is on rural poverty and agro-foos system restructuring 8O Very left brain kind of work; the music keeps me sane.

Hats off to knotkranky too. I thought of Massive Attack: that's not love baby, it's just the way things should be.

Mastering and mix engineer, the occasional gig provides some income as well.
