Have you tried Carbon Copy Cloner?
It's much more the shit. Bootable clones and scheduled backups make it worth every penny, in my opinion.
Just make sure to set spotlight up to not index your backup drive, lest you find yourself inadvertently running apps form your backup drive instead of your system drive.

No problem.
Not sure about time machine. I didn't like not being able to schedule backups for a frequency less than every hour + it was constantly backing up. Like, it seemed like that shit was ALWAYS running. I tried some third party stuff to try to run backups on a more sane schedule, but they didn't work.
They have a 30 day free trial - give it a whirl. Don't forget the spotlight indexing thing. That was the only annoyance for me, but was a really easy fix.

"To disable Spotlight indexing on a volume that is dedicated to backup, drag the icon of the target volume into the "Privacy" tab of Spotlight Preference Pane in the System Preferences application. If you do want the backup volume indexed, drag its icon out of the "Privacy" tab after the cloning and indexing will start immediately."
seems easy enough for a novice like me!
