Daft Punk Unchained was quite a bit better than I was expecting.

Ted 2. Liked it for the most part. Don’t remember the first one. It’s like watching a long live action episode of Family Guy that they had to unfortunately create a storyline that falls flat. Watch it for the many lol moments, not for a well-crafted narrative.

Deadpool. Really liked it. Even did a digital preorder in case iTunes runs out of downloads on release day. :)

Using the Flixster app there’s a big gap in critic reviews vs. user reviews on Batman vs. Superman. Rotten Tomatoes: 30% Users: 74%

However, I noticed a big percentage of user reviews are based just on users wanting to see the movie or rating the movie based on their expectations. What the hell is the point of those type reviews and ratings? :?

I stopped looking at reviews for movies I'm interested in. So many times I almost didn't go see something because the reviews weren't that good, and yet I ended up enjoying it. And vice versa. Now I just like to be surprised.

But if a movie has an overall low rating I have yet to see one where everybody was wrong. About the only time I will completely ignore reviews is when I trust the source(s) that are recommending I check it out.

On that note, I checked out The Sheik on Netflix recommended by Comedy Film Nerds. Not low rated, but wasn’t even aware of it. It’s a documentary on wrestling’s Iron Sheik from the 80’s. It’s suggested that Hulkamania and professional wrestling’s popularity rise wouldn’t have happened without him. There was also an incident he was involved in that brought the whole “is wrestling fake?” controversy to public attention. It’s pretty interesting and full of emotional ups and downs.

Often true! Better with reviews of critics you dig & know for many years though. (duh!) And still...

I definitely wouldn't base it off of Rotten Tomatoes. Half of those people shouldn't even be writing.

I admit to basing around IMDB though. If it's around a 6 I'm sure it still has something in it worth enjoying. Anything below that, probably not, but there are exceptions. Especially if they're really low or aren't many raters.

I like being surprised too, so I generally only read reviews after I've seen a film. And, considering the poor state of film criticism (more often than not merely a synopsis), so-called reviews are often filled with spoilers.

I do check ratings from critics I appreciate:

Reading decent reviews can open a film up to additional perspectives, insights, or production history.

P.S. http://moria.co.nz/index.htm?option=com ... 4&Itemid=1 is the singular greatest source of criticism & information about horror, science fiction, & fantasy films I have ever found online. Intelligent, highly informed, & usually spot-on. Highly recommended.

I don’t go to the movies that much and if I am unsure of a movie I check reviews before I waste my time and money. I’m probably one of the few people on earth that liked the first Zoolander movie. Didn’t have high hopes for the second but if it got well reviewed I probably would have gone to see it in the theater. It didn’t, so I didn’t. I didn’t really like Man of Steel so odds are if 70% of critics don’t like Batman vs. Superman I won’t either.

But I lower the bar for things I’m going to watch on Netflix or VOD. I’m fine taking the risk on that low to no cost. Will probably check out the new Pee Wee movie on Netflix this weekend. :)

I see more flicks via streaming, like Netflix, so I'm not risking big bucks. But your point is well taken.

By the way, original Zoolander RULES! "But why male models?"
