Proudly collecting music gear and software for no purpose

Post by beats me » Tue Apr 07, 2015 2:47 pm

There are a lot more useless things people collect and just because something has a potential purpose doesn’t mean you have to use it or feel guilt and shame about it. If the acquisition and ownership makes you happy then let yourself be content with that.

Just sayin’.

Yes. :)

Just letting my brothers and the one sister who hasn't posted on here since the spring of 2013 know that it's OK.

In the documentary "I Dream of Wires", one interviewee commented that there are a lot of folks buying modular only to collect them and have no interest or talent in creating music. The upside to this is that there is an exploding market for modules, spawning all sorts of "boutique" houses that are introducing a wave of new modules to the market.

Because of all these collectors, those of us who do use them for music have a much wider array of products to choose from.

So yeah, I hope they keep "collecting". :D

Good point. One of the rabbit holes I’m scared to go down is those groove boxes from Korg, Roland, etc. If you have a lot of software it seems like just one wouldn’t be a lot of value added. It’s when you get a bunch and start linking them together and working outside the box/DAW that they start shining as a performance rig.

Yes, the above statement kind of contradicts my point about just buying gear for no purpose. :x

If you want to make music, why would you buy modular stuff in the first place?

Doh! Snap!

Guess you better ask these guys. They all appear in the documentary to talk about how important modular is to their music.

Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Vince Clarke (Erasure), Morton Subotnick, Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), Daniel Miller, Carl Craig, Flood, Cevin Key (Skinny Puppy), James Holden, Factory Floor, Legowelt, Clark, John Foxx and Bernie Krause.

I just grabbed this list from the website: http://sciencewithsynthesizers.com/idre ... /news.html

I have been marginalized to this reality. I made a substantial earnings increase with a job change over a year ago, and syphoned my extra cash into gear (especially guitars and stomp boxes, having had a revival of inspiration to play more guitar the last couple of years, and the new moog synth offerings), yet now I have less time, and keep fooling my self that the shiny new toy will be my muse to creation.
I think what I really nostalgically miss, is the back in day scenario of 4 guys sweating it out in a garage, and just jamming endlessly, tapping into occasional moments of magic within mundane noise....at my age everybody is just so over and beyond that, and more invested in producing...
Somedays I wonder if selling my 12 string in 94 to buy my first rompler and sampler, was where I went astray, and I should have stayed the course of my then identity of a guitarist.

I think there's an unspoken forum rule that any joke you attempt will be completely misinterpreted.

For the record I own Push and don't have a modular. :x

No worries!!!

Everybody on this forum seems to have a different idea about what is music and how to make it. And I've been called out on my love of hardware at least a couple times.

It's all good.
