Is it time to buy an Ipad Pro?
Hello Friends....Long time no speak. Been holding off buying an Ipad for the longest time but it seems there are so many apps now related to music production and even specific soft synths I own, I am wondering if investing in an Ipad Pro finally makes sense. Anyone using Ipad as a controller or some type of instrument?

Good time for the 9.7”. Iffy on the 12”. I want a 12 but they may announce a new one in September, but that guess is based on precedent for previous iPhone and 9.7 iPad cycles. They may try to milk the 12 for longer. The current 12 is already missing tech Apple has in other devices like 3D touch and the best screen. The 9.7 Pro has the best screen and software screen options available currently from Apple.

Not many music based apps are taking advantage of the pro's 'features'. The pencil and the dual apps (and the air 2 supports the dual app but I consider it a pro feature because it is a feature that is nicest when you get to have a larger screen).
Plus, the portability of the iPad is astounding. The big one is..... I guess it depends what you want.

I've got one, and it's fantastic. Bigger screen is always better.
The Moog Model 15 modular app is incredible on it. Stereo speakers in the Pro make a big difference when using without an external interface.
Never looking back!

Is it time to finally buy an Ipad Pro??
I have been watching with much anticipation all the new apps that seem to be coming available for the Ipad. Reason I ask this question, I mentioned I am starting Dubspot next week in NYC which gives me about 90 minutes of roundtrip commute time (excluding subway). . I do NOT need a laptop at the moment because I work at home in my Imac. Does anyone see any value in finally picking up an Ipad for both a controller and as an instrument to learn some apps during my commute into NYC?

Wait for the refresh of the Ipad pro 12 because it will most likely have force touch. Force touch will allow you to have velocity sensitivity...
Re: Is it time to finally buy an Ipad Pro??
I’m waiting for that as well but it may not be for another year because the current version is pretty powerful already and there is no historical refresh cycle on it yet. And I think Apple is looking to move away from yearly cycles because it just leads to hesitation on buying and people being disappointed there isn't mind blowing innovation every damn year.Precisionguided wrote:Wait for the refresh of the Ipad pro 12 because it will most likely have force touch. As a personal peeve, people need to start saying if they are talking about the 9.7 or 12 iPad Pro. There is a big difference, literally and figuratively.

Dear Ableton,
Please make a watered-down version of Live for the iPad Pro.

Going to pickup a used Ipad pro 12.9. is 128GB or 256GB the way to go. This will be used exclusively for music but will have every decent app loaded up and I am sure I will store some music on ipad as well. It's about $100 difference online between 128gb & 256 GB.
Thanks

If you're going to be mainly using an iOS DAW like Auria or Cubasis where you'll generate a lot of longer audio files in one project, then maybe go larger if you can. If you're sticking with self-containted apps like Gadget, Auxy, iMS-20, etc, then even 128GB will be way more than you use. I have a TON of apps on my 32GB Air2 plus my whole DJ library, and am only using about 20GB total.

Clearly not in lossless then. My library is 200+ GB.Tarekith wrote:I have a TON of apps on my 32GB Air2 plus my whole DJ library, and am only using about 20GB total.

Clearly you jumped to an assumption, since I have only ever DJ'd with lossless files.
I use aiff's so the artwork and metadata is embedded in the file itself and not dependant on the app I decide to use. I'm just very picky about what I DJ and tend to retire a lot of tracks after a couple years. My DJ library right now is about 200 tracks and takes up roughly 14GB. I'm not a full-time DJ, so that's more than enough for the 5-6 shows I do each year.

Re: Is it time to finally buy an Ipad Pro??
I found a mint Ipad pro 12.9 256GB wifi on ebay for $749. I am starting a solo gig soon and going to use loopers, play wireless midi guitar with soft synths in Ableton, and recently realized that the Ipad is not only great for all the various apps now available, but when I gig and use Link, it will add a new dimension to my sound. Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Just checked out Syntorial. I am all over that. Awesome bro. Thanks
That is the first app I am purchasing. I own a Moog Sub 37 so this app will be perfect compliment.AustinThumper wrote:I've got one, and it's fantastic. Bigger screen is always better.
