Then you have the tech angle, which is much more complex. Like what happened in one of these threads where the user complained about CPU levels and then found out it was because of some security software they had installed. The user might have laid down a dissertation of screeds against the company beforehand, but after they figure out the problem was on their end all they offer is a "My bad, guys."
yeah I've been really noticing it a lot more recently everywhere, and seems to be the nature of the beast with the internet in its current state, and I think a strong case can be made that it's really ramped up a lot more recently and becoming a real problem everywhere. It probably relates to the "fake news" thing in that it could have a lot to do with information overload, permanent distraction, and nobody reading shit any more, except for 140 character tweets and outrage-bait headlines. People seem to be getting more polarised about almost everything, and everyone is looking for something to get offended by or angry about as quickly as possible.

I'm actually starting to think it might have a lot to do with social media algorithms herding everyone into narrow echo chambers, recursively reinforcing opinions and firing people up.

One of the most eye-opening warnings I've heard about AI have been from Nick Bostrom and Max Tegmark's UN briefing (They were mostly warning the UN that it's an arms race we really don't want to even start. Well worth watching), as well as Elon Musk, making the point that a lot of the AI researchers saying human level intelligence, or the 'singularity' or whatever is still decades away, if not a century, but they are basically talking about human-like intelligence, but it's more likely to come in the form of the kinds of machine learning Facebook, Google etc are working on, so there is an even bigger danger that they have no way of predicting exactly how it will develop, and silicon valley geeks ("probably somewhere on the spectrum" I think maybe Musk said) powering on with it, with no real ability to anticipate the consequences. Facebook already had to shut down an experiment because it started inventing its own language.

But it's not impossible one of those unexpected consequences could be something along the lines of Facebook and YouTube trying so hard to "give people what they want" they end up herding 2 billion people into opinion pens and stirring them into a frenzy, increasingly divided into "us and them" and convinced the "them" are pure evil because everything they keep seeing over and over reinforces it, so they have no choice but to stop them, and the same is happening to the other "them".

So yeah, skynet.

Seriously, in my opinion it's just a reaction to Live going from at one point being one of the cheapest DAWs with the lowest upgrade path to the opposite. Like I mentioned earlier it IMO has a lot to do with the amount of mouths to feed Ableton now has. It means deep market penetration, lots of new features and content, but a higher price for Suite. The only comparably priced DAW I know of out the door is Pro Tools at $599 with their lock you in or pay the consequences $99 a year update plane. Compare that to Suite at $799 and $299 upgrade prices roughly every 3-4 years.

Logic, DP, Reaper, Reason etc. are all cheaper than those two. but you pay the piper if you want to play. :x

interesting subversion technique comrade.

well timed to get in before the edit 8O

I never understood what this emoticon is supposed to be :x but it immediately made me think of LSZ, I probably don't need to ask if he got the hammer.

Dunno? he stopped posting that often, maybe using another DAW?
Always loved the 'mad' emoji :x since he looks sort of cutely mad!

Oh, and this one  bothers me. Looks like it's curling it's upper lip, like some aristocratic dork...

:x <- Mr. Wong

LSZ was being stalked by some disgruntled asshat... probably the same one that kept doing password reset requests in Soundcloud for a number of us. anyway, he got to the point where he didn't trust anyone and finally just stopped posting altogether.

the try not to have any fun forum rules that Ableton implemented probably didn't help either.

That's too bad. I'm surprised this forum has survived the whole ordeal as much as it has actually. OSXAudio at one point was a thriving community and it crashed heavily after some heavy handed moderation happened and some of the funnier, and thought provoking people left. Incidentally Urs Heckman of U-He was a frequent visitor and more or less first created a stir with Zebra 1.0 there. :x Wong approves.

Hi folks, just wondering about something you might have the answer to. I upgraded from live 9 to live 10 and afterwards i noticed that the live 9 installation is still in the apps folder after installing the newer version on the mac, is there any issue if delete it? (it's 1,44 GB of space).

Thanks ;)

No, you can delete it if you want. Ableton let's you run both versions if you want (say you have a collaberator that doesn't have Live 10 yet), that's why it's not over-written.

LOL, in fact I agree with this, the current climate of polarization is unhealthy and the echo chambers are the cause.

So coming back to Live, it is not as expensive if you consider how many years the last two updates took, and the minor updates along the ride.

Live Suite is definitely more expensive than Logic, Reaper, Studio One, DP and Reason. Compared to those DAWs Live is not cheap by any means.
It's right in there with Pro Tools with their yearly update plan, and Cubase with their almost yearly upgrades, but cheaper initial costs.

It just depends on what you want out of a DAW though, not many DAWs have bothered to design their own controller like Ableton did with Push II, and for live playback of clips, uninterrupted audio etc. Live is still king. (Mainstage beats the pants off of it when it comes to switching FX racks and instruments on the fly though)

In that sense it's like complaining that cars aren't all the same price. To peoples credit though I would rather upgrades every two years at $150 than every four years at $300. $300 is a lot to shell out all at once for some improvement to what you already have, but at this point $150 is a night out on the town..

That doesn't really impact the price of the application upgrades though eh?
Push is a separate product and has its own purchase price. I'm pretty sure is profitable in its own right. £600 for a controller!
No matter how fancy it is - I'm pretty sure there's a healthy profit margin in there, and I don't think it's integrated into the upgrade cost of the DAW application.

Absolutely right, I'm just saying that the big advantages Live has over other DAWs are Session View, uninterrupted (for the most part) audio, a pretty painless UI UX experience, and dedicated hardware controllers. I actually don't see the point of using it if you're not getting some specific advantage that way.

Not being negative about it, just being flatly realistic. If you can handle a learning curve, don't need live performance features, aren't interested in Push, etc. then it's just expensive, and maybe doesn't have a few features you do want.
