Do I need the 3.1 Gbyte Macbook Pro (with Touch ???)

Asking for a friend - I'm a PC user so am not sure on all things Mac.

My friend's son needs a laptop for audio work - mostly Ableton and Fruity loops, and some graphics/video stuff, and has said he HAS to have the 3.1 GHz Macbook pro (of course "all his mates are getting one!!!").

Sounds like overkill to me, and my friend thought so too. Do any Mac users have any advice?. Teenage kid getting into music production, is it necessary for 3.1 GHz MBP or is the base model MBP with 2.3 GHz adequate?

Just to add - the touch bar, while neat, tends to crash quite frequently (I have one). Can be a bit of a nightmare!

The important bit for investing into any music Mac is getting a 15" MBP with quadcore CPU. 13"s have duocores. So if this is a money question, I'd advise your friend to get a 15" MBP on the second hand market. 2014 MBP and later is performance-wise still competitive with current ones.

Haven’t seen that yet with mine at all. What happens, does it just go blank?
