Perhaps I may be the only one who didn't upgrade to 10?

Post by downfader » Wed Feb 07, 2018 2:46 pm

£183 is a lot of money tbh. Especially for how little has changed from 9 to 10. I know there are purists that will get every update, but for me and the few extra tools I saw on offer its worth me waiting. A lot of musos like myself dont do this for a living and are working full time in ordinary employment. You have to weigh up the bills with your (often still very serious) hobby.

I think there is also something to be said for learning to use other tools to create the sounds and textures you might hear in new products. It means you learn something new from exploring rather than using something dedicated for the process.

This is in no way me telling you "dont upgrade". Just make sure its the right choice for yourself.

I don't also make a living from music, but still made the upgrade. I worked with Beta 10, and felt so good about it, in a strangeway the new features for push2 are so pleasant for me. I can work faster now, and I'm more inspired. Not by the new devices, but the workflow is better.

Then again, it is an lot of money..... You are right about that!

While I agree with your sentiments I don't see how a working person could think that sum is wildly high. I lost my main job recently and still managed to scrape together what was needed for the update* and a mother board repair, being unemployed with kids and 2 rents. Everyone's situation is different of course and costs vary.

Another way to look at the cost is to realize that you will get quite likely 4 years of updates and support for about 46£ a year. Given the excellence of Ableton support I think an equivalent sum of 4£ a month is a very acceptable price to pay.

I feel too many compare software fees to free or subsidized alternatives. It's of course up to each of us to choose what we want to use, but in the long run if we want companies like Ableton to continue to exist and evolve their products we need to give also monetary support at some occasions.

Also I can mention I think you're not alone in not upgrading. None of my main collaborators have said they will update.

* My case being somewhat different in that I sold Suite, bought Standard and Max For Live. But the mother board repair puts the combined outlays well above the upgrade fee.
Make some music!

I look at the cost this way :

£189, and it's probably going to be another 4 years before Live 11, so that's 183 / 48 months
183/48 = £3.81 a month. Which isn't much money, but any value is determined by need. £3.81 for a thing I never used would be bad value.

Do I need Live 10 or can I use Live 9 Well, L9 doesnt display correctly on my Laptop, so I need the 4k display.
I don't need the new devices as they don't function as I'd like - but Max being less crashy is handy, and the faster startup is a godsend for me.
I do know I need to use Live most days in a month, so it will be in regular use and any benefits or pitfalls will be cumulative.

So, I judged that £3.81 was worth it simply for the ability to start quicker, and view it correctly on my laptop.
Yep, not exactly amazing features but worth £3.81

I decided not to upgrade. Ableton has continued to move in a direction that doesnt fit my needs and workflow, which is fine, and I'm sure I'm in the minority on that. I had a push and didnt take to it and I hardly use session view now. I'm not sure what I will try next so for now I will stick with 9.

I essentially save for all my kit by putting away a small amount like that from each pay packet. Hopefully at some point (and along some updates) I will upgrade. I've probably overspent during the last year due to lots of other people and companies selling off kit cheaper due to Brexit impacts, cost of living rising etc.

It's not sounding very musical, but everything is expensive in the music industry. Buy yourself a Moog Model D for example.... Not that I have one, but as example. In the last year I bought a new specialist PC for music, Ableton Live 9 Suite Push2, Presonus Eris E8 monitors, a monitor controller, NI Massive and then some stuff. And now the update to Live 10 Suite. I'm broke after this update, can't spent another penny on music stuff anymore, and sold some gear to cover the costs.

OK I can work the way I want now...... Stepping over from Cubase and then some crappy stuff I used to work with.

I must say I'm happy and delighted right now, and hope this smile stays on for a long time though, as it will take some time before I buy something else.

Wavetable alone is worth the upgrade price.
199 is damn cheap compared to some 3th party vstplugs.
Am happy with 10.

Yeah I really like the look of Wavetable. Hope they expand the bare wavetable sounds, too.

@downfader

I'm completely with you mate. This marks the first time I won't be upgrading Live from 9.x, will live with that version for the foreseeable future and maybe down the line if they have some promotion will consider it. For a Suite user who has upgraded through the revisions (looked and my last invoice was $149 to go from 8 to 9) asking $299 is utterly ridiculous. I think even if it was an uber feature rich upgrade I'd be far from wanting to hand over $300 but as is a couple of new devices and workflow enhancements aren't anything I'm going to be enticed with. Was really looking forward to my Push 2 enhancements but oh well.

Really feel bad fro the Standard owners, that upgrade was ridiculously lacking in anything of substance.

I was very happy when they first announced the new features, then cooled off a bit when I realised many of the new features are actually rather half-baked. But as I started working with the beta, something just kind of fell into place, and I preordered relatively quickly. I had a full track laid out in Arrangement really fast (started a brand new project when I got beta access), and just felt like going with it. I think the sum of new features that I really like is good enough, even though those features aren't necessarily the ones I THOUGHT would reel me in.

And if my money in any way contributes to keeping Live a non-subscription solution, that's a big bonus...

 this makes me want to upgrade.

can anyone tell/me to which of the inevitable 'Live 10 thoughts' threads is useful for info about the new features?
i've not been on in a while so i'd prefer to get to the point

It's probably worth mentioning that Bitwig has a payment model where you pay every year for continued support and point updates. The yearly payment is 169 USD / 159 EUR

That's £11.66 per month compared to the Ableton £3.81 a month model.

one of these seems a bit expensive

If you want to know about the new features there is a couple of videos on youtube (including ableton's own). Just search "Live 10 new features" and something will pop up. I know mags like Fact and Pitchfork have also covered it all, and its been on the news page of Ableton's own site
