Where are all the 8x endless rotaries controllers?

Post by sporkles » Sat Jan 12, 2019 8:08 pm

I don't understand why there are almost zero simple controllers with endless rotaries on the market.

I've owned two Novation Nocturns, but they were both rubbish and jittery. The idea and design were brilliant, though (minus the fact that you had to go via Automap to get it to work). I also tried a similar thing from Behringer, but it was garbage too. So much of Ableton's philosophy is about the eight encoders, so I wonder where all the small controllers are. I'd love a "Twist" from Ableton themselves, with just the screen, eight encoders and some function buttons from Push, but I don't really see it happening, so I'd be fine with a "dumber" third party option.

Does anyone have any experience with Kenton's Killamix Mini?

I know I've lamented this previously, but I just find Push too big to sit in front of me at my desk. I now have an M-Audio 32 key mini controller and a Launchpad Mini - all I'm missing, really, are the eight encoders.

Yeah that's insane.
What we need is endless knobs with associated oled screens that display name and value. That's it.
Time to warm the soldering iron and go arduino ?

Preach. When I daydream about this, I imagine them sized to have 3 or 4 units fit horizontally into a rack. Bonus points if they are daisy chain-able so you could run a few of them off a single USB port. Could be about the size of 2 LaunchControls.

I've considered making a few rows of encoders with rings of LEDs for myself, but I've never made any progress on it. I'm looking at a teensy for development these days, because it has that Audio daughter board. But I digress.

looks like a job for a big stack of multiplexers to me!

Kenton Killamix MINI, I will never sell mine for this reason. :D

Feels great, always works, solid feeling. The acceleration on the knobs is unique feeling at first, but I wouldn't say it was bad. I cut my joystick to half height to make it even easier to transport.

I can't recommend the MIDI Twister enough

I believe its a good bit cheaper than the Killamix and has more knobs too.
DjTech Tools also has a remote script that has some really nice Ableton functionalities.
