Packs install location when using two computers?

Post by Mr D » Mon Mar 25, 2019 11:01 am

Hi folks,

Imagine the following scenario:

I make music on two different computers (one at the studio, one at home).

I want to keep as much stuff as possible on an external USB drive, which i can then take with me, so i can open projects on either comp'.

My question is: if install packs at the studio, and choose (in the prefs) a location on the external USB drive, all good.

But what happens when i arrive home? I plug in the disk, fire up Ableton. In this home version of Ableton i have the exact same location set in prefs for the pack location.

BUT! ...... this isn't the computer i actually installed the packs on. Does that matter? If not, are there any variables? Like it will only work if both studio & comp are running the same version of Ableton? I guess my question is also about how the copy protection on packs works. Where and how is the authorization written?

And lastly, anyone have any words of wisdom or charming anecdotes to share about running this kind of portable setup?

Many thanks!

Should work on both comps.
I have my packs on one USB drive and I can access it with my two computers, only one of which was used to install the packs.

Thanks!

So i guess the copy protection is written into the packs themselves.
