Direct Experiences: Ryzen 3900X or i9 9900K?

Post by someofthem » Thu Sep 26, 2019 8:25 pm

Hi!
Someone had a direct experience with a Ryzen 3900X in Ableton Live?
I know that Intel's CPU are better optimized with Ableton Live.
My only direct experience was with Intel's.
I don't want to buy another intel refresh with an outdated
architecture.
I've read the Scan Pro Audio comparison but i don't know how could this apply to Ableton(or Intel Optimized programs).
I'm truly undecided for my new Rig...
Thanks in advance to all

Following this. I am interested as I plan to build a PC soon, and thinking of getting a Ryzen Processor.

Could they be that bad for DAW? I don't think so

MBP M1 Max 64 GB Ram, OSX 14.3.1

ive just had a new PC build with a Ryzen 5 3600x.

no problems, but i cant really say ive tested its performance. most of my projects are tiny.

if somone wants to send me a project to test it on, id happily oblige.

Any new opinions regarding this? Do you use Ryzen with Ableton and can say few words about this? Is it worth?

I'm happy with my 3900X. I did have a lot of issues trying to get my MOTU Ultralite Mk3 to play nice with it though and eventually gave up and reverted to an old Focusrite 2i4 that I have. Works flawlessly with that. The MOTU was temperamental even with my i7-4790K though.

In terms of performance there's a new benchmark thread here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=239381

I've stuck my machine in for comparison.

This statement makes no sense to me. AMD and Intel run the same OS, so Live isn't optimized for one chip or another. What you want to look at is the number of cores, the ability of the chip to multitask, and the per-core performance. Intel only has an advantage on the per-core performance, and even that is only by a hair. The number of cores and the multi-tasking ability of Ryzens are literally effing amazeballs. If I wasn't stuck on a Mac, I'd build a 3950 Ryzen machine with 16 cores and then call it a day.

Build your machine and pick the parts at PCPartsPicker.com.
