I bought the Akai MPK249 because I wanted a compact keyboard that I could play and record simple accompaniments (rhythms, bass lines, etc.) to my live music making. I had hoped to find a simple DAW that would support perhaps a few dozen basic instruments – like the Yamaha and Roland $500 keyboards with speakers I’ve been using for 40 years!
All I could find to get me started was the Ableton Live Lite CD, so I dragged my old brain through the onboard tutorials, a book, some videos, and most recently about half (so far) of a Coursera offering on Live. Though I’ve produced a few interesting tracks, it’s been far more work than I intended, and it’s still damned complicated to to play/record simple tunes using basic sounds.
I do think Akai should supply simple software that would allow purchasers to start making music ‘out of the box’ but instead I’ve been lured into Ableton Live – a yacht instead of the rowboat I wanted!
