Do you get your hearing tested?

Post by Amplitude_Hearing » Wed Feb 24, 2021 5:48 pm

Hi Guys,
I am a hearing researcher and audiologist working in the UK. I also, obviously, love making music using Ableton and have always found the community very knowledgeable and supportive so I thought I'd ask your opinion.
I have a PhD from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at University of Southampton. Research interest is biological factors that determine hearing performance for people who use cochlear implants. Anyway, that's slightly off topic but I thought I'd give a quick introduction.
Myself and an audiology colleague are thinking of setting up a service that would include audiometry (up to 16kHz), microsuction wax removal, custom ear plugs/monitors and a personalised consultation based the individual musician's listen behaviours. The idea would be to offer accurate monitoring of hearing sensitivity as well as other metrics of auditory processing that inform about the functionality of the ears and hearing brain.
We're also interested to introduce other tests like genetics and markers of inflammation which can indicate a persons risk of early onset hearing loss. I meet people in the audiology clinic that, through music or industrial exposure, have sustained a significant hearing loss that might have been avoided or minimised if they had known their predisposition beforehand.
Do any of you guys use audiology services already? Do you use custom plugs and/or in-ear monitors? Is there room for a specialist hearing service for the Ableton-type musician?
Cheers
