Is there something new in a big way with 8.3, or is it just what happens if you count 8.2.9 -> 8.3. I assumed it'd be 8.2.10, and the 8.x upgrades were for new bigger things like Max or the Bridge?

I'm wondering about this, too. Seems the only really new thing is the automatic update function?

The new Automatic Update feature is a wonderful pile of crap, it seems. Checking for updates still opens a browser page, as usual. More importantly, however, the install itself is still full of crap. Why does Ableton not automatically clean up leftover shit after installing? The only real improvement I have noticed in the last couple of years is that installing Live on OS X does not install *Windows* (!!!) files anymore. Go figure. :P

Also, the new SoundCloud feature does not include any PPC code. Afaik that means that this feature is not useable on PPC machines. Hopefully Ableton will now also (finally!) take the next logical step, and toss out the PPC code in Live as well.

For the convenience of OS X users, here's a bunch of commands I ran in Terminal to clean up and strip the fat after installing the latest 8.3 release:

Code:
rm -r /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/App-Resources/DefaultPackages

rm /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/LegalAndDocs/Docs/User\ Manual\ French.pdf /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/LegalAndDocs/Docs/User\ Manual\ German.pdf /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/LegalAndDocs/Docs/User\ Manual\ Italian.pdf /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/LegalAndDocs/Docs/User\ Manual\ Japanese.pdf /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/LegalAndDocs/Docs/User\ Manual\ Spanish.pdf

rm -r /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/LegalAndDocs/Legal

lipo -remove ppc /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/MacOS/Live -o /Applications/Ableton\ Live\ 8.app/Contents/MacOS/Live

If you care about non-English versions you should adapt it a tiny bit. It should be easy enough to understand what these lines do anyway: the command rm removes stuff completely, lipo -remove ppc just removes the PPC code from fat binaries.

Wrong.. If you're clicking "Check for updates" from the Help menu, then it's hardly an automated process you've initiated.. That's what would be a 'manual' update check.

The automatic update feature runs in the background seamlessly and downloads updates if it finds any when you launch Live. Then when you close Live, if there are updates downloaded & waiting it will apply them so the next time you start the new version will already be in place.

Yeah, I understood that allright, sorry if that wasn't clear. But I maintain that it seems to be a wonderful pile of crap. I'll bet you that it's going to reinstall the Japanese manual and fat PPC code at least once (but more likely: over and over).

Ableton Live 8 program only = 585,7 MB - with only the german & english manual & PPC stripped (one click with Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner…) = 436,2 MB. So nothing big, but still.

As for the manuals, no big deal right clicking Ableton Live 8 & going to Ableton Live 8.app/Contents/LegalAndDocs/Docs/ & delete...

Quote from Ableton homepage:

*********
By default, Live is now installed under

C:\ProgramData\Ableton on Windows 7 and Vista and
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ableton on Windows XP.
*********

I have never heard of any program that would install itself into ProgramData folder. Almost all programs that I have install under c:\program files or c:\program files (x86). The only (and notable) exception that comes to my mind is Google Chrome that installs under C:\Users\username. And I think I do have many auto updating programs or at least they offer the dialog that "do you want to update". Altough it hardly matters but was it really neccessary change?-D
