Second Hand Push Issues

Can you update Push's firmware if you bought the unit from someone that doesn't have the serial registered to themselves? I purchased this unit on Ebay from a guy that bought the unit as an open box item from a retailer (neglected to tell me that). Ableton basically said oh well you're SOL even though I have the device in my possession with the serial number on the back, which I don't get because this is a piece of hardware. If I can still get updates for the firmware than no biggie if not I need to know cause Ebay's going to get my money back.

I'm a bit confused here...the Push was registered already when you got it? Surely the simple solution is to find out who the serial number of the Push is actually registered to? Find out and get it transferred! (this is all providing the ebay dealer didn't get it from the back of a truck if you get my meaning)... the retailer shouldn't have registered the Push, so the number should be good to go.

I can see needing the serial for a version of Live for using Push.

But I am surprised that the firmware needs to be updated. Is it not doing anything??

I thought the OP was referring to the Push serial number, but if the OP needs the software, I would have thought the same logic outlined above would apply for the Live Intro software "that comes with every Push"

Yea that's what I thought but when I contacted the seller he didn't seem to have actually registered the device.

It works but I want to be able to upgrade the firmware going forward Push has a lot of shortcomings.

I'm still missing something here... If the ebay seller hasn't registered the Push, why can't you?

Edit - personally, I don't think the Push has 'a lot' of shotcomings. In a perfect world it would do everything every user required, yes, but that's not a realistic expectation! Developers like NativeKontrol are already expanding the functionality of Push. I do understand your desire to be able to access future firmware updates, but why don't you explore all the cool things you can do with it right now? (& don't tell me you've already exhausted that option!)
:D

Because someone else did. It may have been him it may have been someone else but it's registered already .

So ask Ableton support to contact the person who initially registered it to:
1. Establish that the Push has actually been sold on legitimately and
2. Ask them to transfer the license to you.

I've already contacted Ableton this was there response
Hi there,

Thanks for contacting Ableton support.

You are still able to use the Push without it registered to your account but we are unable to remove it from someone else's account to move it to yours, unless we get written permission to do so.

We hope you understand, and apologies for any inconvenience you may experience in the meantime.

Best regards,

Chris
Ableton Support
As you can see they weren't very helpful.

So it functions. And you are looking for 'firmware' ?

Most of its functions are actually controlled within Live, not the controller. If the firmware was bad, you would likely be unable to use it for anything other than a mappable midi controller.

what yur2die4 said makes sense...

BUT, if you really think you are going to need this in future - Simply, contact Ableton again to ask them nicely if they can request a transfer of the Push serial to your account from whomever has the serial number registered to them - because if they don't have that particular Push, they have no need for serial registered to it in their account. If you can't establish who actually registered it, let Ableton know, they should have the details of whoever did register it in their database... You know the serial number right?

I also dont think updating the firmware is going to have anything to do with you having a serial number or not. There is nothing to download in your account just because you have a push number

I assume if there are going to be any firmware updates its going to be done through the dump button or some other means built into ableton and not from a download on your account (btw dont hit the dump button as its screwed up some people). The program itself doesnt care if you have a push serial or not on your account, so it shouldnt matter

Alright. I reread his original post.
Basically he is saying, he just wants to make sure that if there Are any updates, he will not miss out on them due to not being registered.

And, I have no clue, but I think most actual updates are done in the Live scripts with each update, and those just communicate with the firmware already set in place on Push.

there are currently no firmware updates and I dont think registering the product will have any effect on being able to update it

If you try to update firmware currently you are likely to brick the Push. It can be fixed but you should contact Ableton Support
