Reasons for keeping Push 1, please add yours

Post by Stromkraft » Sun Nov 08, 2015 10:55 pm

I'm trying to sober up and change my mind on getting the new Push 2. These are the reasons I've come up with so far:
  • Push 1 with PXT Live is still pretty darn powerful next to Push 2. When PXT products comes with Push 2 support that will likely change, but we're not there yet.
  • My pads are actually consistent both in velocity response and in color.
  • I never must use the power supply, which is one less piece I need to move about
  • While I think it's very cool I don't have need for a waveform display
  • The 400€ or so can be better spent on a new computer, or new monitors.

What other reasons are there to keep the Push 1? Please add yours or comment on mine and the whole situation.
Make some music!

Well, I just bought a Push on the trade-in deal.

But you make a good point, and here are some of the reasons I enumerated in my own analysis. Here are a few good reasons to stay with Push 1:

1. It's still gonna cost you $560 even if you trade in.
2. Eventually, there will be a Push 3. You don't have to upgrade EVERY time a new one comes out.
3. Push 1 is still an excellent device. Well built. All your stuff is working. Introducing a change right now may introduce issues, instabilities, and end up costing you time.
4. Christmas is coming up. This may not be the best time for you to buy something for yourself.
Desktop: Intel i7 hex-core, 64 GB ram, several SSDs, Focusrite Liquid 56, UAD-2.
Laptop: Alienware Area 51: Intel i9, 32 GB RAM, several more SSDs, UAD Apollo Twin.
Software: Win 10, Cubase, Live+Push2, Maschine, and more.

1. Power supply. I make every effort to hate my stuff as mobile/minimal as possible. Last night I had Maschine, Push, a mouse, Launch Control XL (and my touchscreen), no audio interface. Just packed it all up, plugged in the laptop and had a jam with my buddy.
2. Been seeing Windows/Maschine issues (I'm sure they'll get ironed out)
3. I'm a student who is practically living off of loans at the moment :/
4. Every time I revisit Push 1.... I fall back in love with it

I think it'd help make my mind up if I had a hands on. There are a lot of verrrry cool things about Push 2. For now I guess I'll play it safe and make use of what I have :) Looking forward to Link

Push 2 crashes Live 9.5 if Maschine or Komplete Kontrol VST's are instantiated on any track.
(Normal vst's seem unaffected, even those with NKS like Arturia)

This really sucks - my Push 2 comes tomorrow and I'm afraid I may run into this if macs are affected as well. That's a pretty huge flaw as I'm sure a number of Ableton users are also Maschine Users (I use Maschine in my new track template when live loads).

Here's hoping.

I would bet it will be fixed shortly. Don't panic..
(Push 2 Is simply gorgeous.. :)

IMO, YMMV

I ordered a Push 2 but decided on keeping my Push 1 as well instead of trading it in. Simply because I came to the decision that my original Push is worth more than $240. Figure I can leave it at my studio where it will get less use and keep the Push 2 for home.

+1 on the PXT argument, I use PXT General to browse Kontakt drum banks loaded into Maschine, and Battery as well. It's a great way to use both together, doesn't get old how cool that feels. That's probably the single biggest argument for me. At this point I mostly write in Digital Performer and import into Live for performance etc. so having Push work with both DP and Live, plus with other plug ins etc. is essential to my workflow.

2. Push 1 will probably never go under the $240 range, so as long as that's the case there's no monetary advantage to buying Push 2 now.

3. In fact you're going to be beta testing compatibility issues like people are experiencing with Maschine.

4. in six months there will probably be a sale by Ableton or a reseller like JRR Shop etc. on Push 2 dropping it to the $550-600 range, or someone will sell it used for this, and Push 1 could be sold at that time for $2-300. The math isn't hard, in six months time it's going to be possible to pick up Push 2 for $200-350 after selling Push 1. Plus it will have a few bug fix updates out by then.

If the Reason you're thinking of buying is the charity thing, I wouldn't buy into that. Sure it's great to help kids out, but Ableton are in a 100% win win situation there. You normally cannot write off giving a discount to your customers in your taxes, but if you're "buying back" hardware and gifting it to charity you sure can.
Plus it's a golden opportunity to get kids hooked on your DAW VS Bitwig, Fruity, Logic etc. Ableton are making out big time with this, and lets' be honest here, their program puts a serious limit on the resell ability of Push 1 right now. There are about 5 Push 1's on the Seattle Craigslist going for $3-400. Better to hold on and wait a couple months.

What happens when you sell Push?

You transfer the licence to the buyers account, and they wind up with a copy of Live Intro in their account too?

Yeah, I was deadset the first week on getting one. Then I honestly asked myself why? And the reason was "because it has a pretty screen". If I didn't have V1 I'd buy V2 in a heartbeat, but a few hundred pounds for more sleekness and a screen (which will be a luxury for me, as I have no qualms with V1's navigation etc) is something I'm not sure about.

Also:
-it won't improve my music
-it won't improve my ongoing struggles with mixing
-Push 1 can do most of what 2 can do, plus an update is incoming updating the parameter banks for Simpler etc

When I visit Cape Town in December, my little brother will decide whether to buy Push from me (for £150). If he does, then this will mean I won't have to think for myself and I'll have to get Push 2.

In short, it will be a luxury update, but one that I will certainly enjoy if it happens...

Please be specific - what OS etc? What do you mean 'Push 2 crashes 9.5'? Do those plugs not crash 9.5 until you plug Push2 in? Sorry, would just like specific info as I'm waiting on a Push 2 now.

Ive got mine scheduled for a trade-in, but will see when the Push 2 arrives if I want to keep it !

only reasons I can think of are:
- you need > 1 push
- push 1 has better standalone midi integration, include no requirement for power
- 3rd party software like PXT Live

I think the comment on the charity aspect is a little un-charitable :) win-win, is correct it implies both parties win, which I think is the case... in fact i think its win-win-win (you-ableton-kids)

its a charity thing, yes, you could financially do better, and sure it doesn't cost ableton much (refurb/organisation costs) and gets kids using Push/Ableton ... but regardless of this kids still get a free push and daw to make music with.
so taking the cynical hat off for a second..
when you give kids project ableton + a push, are they going to be happy? are they going to go and make some music?
(lets bare in mind as this thread shows, this is not some piece of has-been junk, the Push 1 is still very useful!)

so sure its good marketing for ableton, but its still a good thing... and something we should encourage companies to do.

...once push 2 lights up you know that you can't go back to push 1...really...push 2 eliminated every "problem" i had with push 1 it seems (e.g. feeling "lost" in device or pad mode)...

PXT Live seems to be the outstanding viable concern... until it's updated for Push 2.

I'm not sure where all these crashing problems are coming from, unless it's Windows based...

I had Live 9.5 running with Push 2, Maschine MK1, Komplete Kontrol S61, APC40 for visuals, Prophet6 on audio track via USB MIDI coming in through a Komplete Audio 6 input interface, and DNX-1600 output interface with zero problems on my 2013 MacBook Pro running Mavericks.

As for power, sure it's one more thing to consider, but you already have to plug in your computer... is one more power adapter that much of a concern? Especially considering the gorgeous display...

There's no doubt I love Push 2 over my Push 1. It just looks and feels so much better, both physically, and mentally. The trade-in program made it a no brainer for me... as I was just discussing with my wife the other day about getting rid of older gear, and that knowing it's going to someone who will now be able to make music reduces my concern over how much I'm getting for it.

I'm curious as to when and by how much the scripts for PushI will be updated.

On their website they declared that the PushI scripts haven't been updated yet but will in the future.

It would be interesting to compare what is physically impossible for PushI to achieve (not counting screen of course) and what 'in theory' can be ported over. For instance there isn't a dedicated Convert button (but you could have a combination of shift + existing button)
