Push 2 - Nobody´s missing audio clip chopping from PXT?

Post by Stefan Jantschek » Wed Dec 23, 2015 11:27 am

IMO that was one of the smartest featues of Push 1/PXT.

Shure the new Simpler warp/slicing methods are fantastic, but i can´t get similar
results.
And it is more kind of editing than performing.

I could use Audio-Tracks, i could change loop/length/start via encoders.
But why are all the pads left blank for that kind of task, even when this script
already exists?

Is it something that has been left for Stray´s possible PXT Push 2?
Or hopefully another update?
Or is really nobody missing it due to the new slicing features?

I use the 'Thru' playback mode after slicing and it gives me a similar thing except that it doesn't restart on it's own. Obviously this also only does 1 sample at a time instead of 8 tracks at once (which I always screw up anyway. I also like that is real time like finger drumming instead of having to press the pads slightly ahead of the quantization grid to stay in timing. It just feels a lot more organic pressing the pads exactly when you want them to hit. With that said, What stray did is absolutely amazing, but now that the new Live has this Play through feature added to slicing, I doubt I will be using Clip Chopping much when the new P(2)XT comes out. If I remember correctly, Stray is already working on a script for Push 2 (don't remember if he said he 'is' or 'will be' working on it, but I'm pretty positive that he confirmed that there will be a script)

I really hope he is either working with the guys that made the Max patch that has the customized display that allows you to see the piano roll and the clips/session view (with clip names and playhead position in clip, like the little wheel) directly on the screen, or possibly working on his own version... Cause that would be amazing.

Have you tried the Play Through feature yet? What did you think of it?

I can´t reproduce big similarities between PTX audio clip chopping and any of the new slicing features of Push 2.
Neither with the "play thru mode"
That gives just control over the starting point of the file.
Like i said, these features are great but different.

Maybe i need to explain what PTX clip chopping actually is/was.

You could split ONE (warped) audio file in BEAT DIVISIONS like 8th/16th etc, and NOT in transient based slices.
Each division part is mapped to one pad.
While performing, you could e.g. tab three connected pads in the middle of your pad grid, leading to play a 3/16th LOOP from the middle of your audio file,
while you could pitch up and down the warped file in real time via encoder.
It keeps on playing in sync until you tab other pads (toggle play).
Instant access!

Slice to midi does not do it, here you need to access every generated drum pad seperately to pitch it up/down and toggle play is not possible witout help from M4L-Devices.

The only way of doing this with push 2 for now is loading the audiofile to audio tracks, no simpler (!) and moving loop length and start point with encoders. To get smaller divisions you need both hands to hold down shift key.
While the whole pad grid is left out of function :-(

Based on Stray´s concept it could be:

-load audio files into AUDIO-tracks,
-press SCENE LAUNCH BUTTONS to set divisions 1, 1/2, 1/4, etc.
-launch selected parts via pad grid.
-twist the pitch up/down while changing loop lenght and playback position in real time, all in sync!

The script is already there!
Just want to know if it´s just me missing it with Push 2...

Things like put the piano roll on Pushs display should be carefully considered.
The new display possibilities can be trappy...
In my perception, the basic idea of Push is to move the workflow from a visual to a more sensoric way.
And not to try to replace my high resolution screen by a low res device.
But that´s another topic...

Merry Chrismas everyone! :-)

If you're looking to chop audio in real time with the Push, I made a device a while back that grabs the currently playing clip, and divides it into 16 slices, playable from the Push (or other controllers). Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but I thought I'd throw it out there:

Thanks, i will try this!

just to mention that this IS possible even without any additional devices, by using the encoders.
But there is no more chance to use the pads for chopping, wich was fantastic even for instant remixing, DJ and wierd sound design...

If you can show me how to do what that device does with encoders on the Push, I would be very surprised. This uses the pads to chop any clip that's playing, not entirely clear how that can be done with just encoders...

Not sure what's possible in M4L, but they are touch sensitive encoders. So in theory they could function as buttons too, no?

It's totally possible to do it with the touch encoders, but I think they were pointing to a solution that didn't involve M4L.

- load audio clip to audio track.
- loop it (warp it - NOT repitch mode)
- start playback of selected clip
- press clip-button on push
- use encoder (loop length) to change loop-size while playback...
- use encoder (start point) to move the playing loop forward/backward in your playing waveform.
in sync, while playback.

And for additional creative results:
- use encoder (transpose) to pitch the file up/down in sync, or via clip automation curve, etc, in sync,
while playback.

problem:
- if you want smaller loops/startpoints, you need to hold down shift key while using encoders
- like said, all the nice pads are out of function for unknown reasons...

this could be the point, where your device or Stray´s script could come in...
or maybe, in my dreams, an Ableton update...;-)

That is a similar effect, but not really the same thing at all, from a playability standpoint. I am curious why Ableton hasn't made this feature part of the Push Workflow, all the function calls are there now.

...exactly, couldn´t agree more!

A main motivation for me to open this thread.
Why isn´t it part of the workflow?
The script is there!
And it adds an insane amount of remixing and performing posibilities to push!
Are we just a small minority who are using/liking this method?
Is anyone else happy with that new simpler slicing?
And... Why has simpler slicing left out particulary SLICE BY BEAT GRID?

I am not complaining indeed...
Maybe there are reasons i don´t kow,
So i like to know...
Not to say i am hoping for a fix.
Don´t like unfulfilled expectations... :?

no you're not alone, please ask ableton directly and let us know why this was not included and if it will be in the extra, very near future?

there is.

Thanks again to Stray´s extraordinary effort, here is a vid which shows all that much better
than i could do with words...
