How to record external synth parameter automation using Push

I have a MIDI clip in arrangement view running for pretty much the entire track length. It is sending MIDI signals to my external synth.

Now, I would like to record some automation throughout the whole track using my Push 2.

I presume that I need to assign the parameters that I'd like to automate to the macros on that track. How do I do this?

And once set up will the automation be recorded to the clip or the track itself?
