My RPM Challenge 2009 contribution: Chocolate Cake

Post by jimbalaya » Tue Mar 03, 2009 4:17 am

Hello everyone,

I spent the month of February taking part in a thing called the RPM Challenge. It's a challenge to produce a record solely in the month of February. For some reason, the people running the challenge over at http://www.rpmchallenge.com decided that the shortest month of the year would be the best time to do this... Either way, for the first time (this is my third year trying), it's complete!

I take pieces of many songs (along with some effects here, there, and everywhere) and put them back together within Ableton Live to create new songs ... It turns into something a bit like a collage or mosaic, but with sound.

You can download the entire album (it's about 30 minutes long) by following this link:

Or you can read more about the recipe and download individual tracks by following this link:

Thank you!

That is an interesting selection tracks to include in a mix.
It has some really nice moments and also some that I didn't like so much but overall I liked it.

Where did you get your inspiration for this mix and where did you get the tracks?

Very cool to see the screen shot of the Abelton project too. :)

I'm glad you (mostly) enjoyed it

The idea wasn't so much to create a mix of songs, but rather a mix of sounds ... The overall project is for the RPM Challenge, which is a challenge to create an album solely within the month of February. So, my month was pretty hectic!

I've got a healthy collection of music, and it's all sorted by key/bpm, so I just started flipping through music (a lot of the samples come from the very beginning of the tune, but some come from the very end or even sometimes right in the middle). I'd find a whole lot of sounds that I liked, most of which were 1, 2, or 4 bar loops, and I'd shove 'em all together by adding effects or cutting & pasting bits or slicing them to midi tracks and triggering bits with my nanoPad ... until it 'worked' ...

I'm going to post each song individually at my site, with more a more detailed screen shot of each track on its own, and a more detailed explanation of what went into the track.

Some good stuff there mate - not listened to all yet but will continue...

Anyway I shoulda checked here sooner - did a search and saw a few of us Live users involved - here's my effort - this links to the jukebox page which is live now apparently

http://meekspeaker.rpmchallenge.com/

had a blast and got me to actually finish something for the first time in ages - and it was all done in ableton and apart from the first track all of it was actually written in Feb with everything recorded in Feb. I think the official rules let that one slide...what the hell!

Anyway I think it's great there isn't a prize as such - apart from the personal acheivement etc!

Cheers...Caleb
