Finally, a followup. Someday there'll be an album's worth of 'em.

wow man, more of the good stuff. reminds me of the Elvises, Presley and Costello... being produced by Van Morrison.

really enjoyed that, I couldn't make out the vocals in parts though.

is it your mics or your room that gives you that sound or ????

1. Audio-Technica AT-3035 (2035, 2020, whatever...cheap and life-changing, at least for me)
2. ART Tube MP Studio – still only ***$30*** at Musician's Enemy
3. Dynamic Tube, the most underrated Ableton plugin. Probably not underrated at all, I just love saying that.
4. The reverb plug from the U-He Uhbik set...everything that gets some is going to the same return track...just one instance.

The built-in "Vintage Channel Strip" effects racks are handy...you get eq/gate/tube/compressor/saturator all in one shot.

Other than that, the drums are single miked with the AT, just sitting 3 or 4 feet out in front of the kit in my somewhat-reflective basement. Loose-miking drums (and handclaps and tambourine and such) like that lends more ambiance than any other single factor. I try to get fat recordings laid down initially, and then most of the EQing is just rolloff from one end or the other or both. A lot of old studios didn't even *have* EQ, so...

Glad you like it. :)

I'm not going to lie, it's not some kinda fantastic preamp, as it's a "master volume" sort of setup where the gain stage is isolated, but it has an actual 12AX7 in it, provides phantom power, and definitely warms signal quietly. I figured the $30 was a clearance price, but I bought my pair probably almost two years ago...maybe they were WAY overstocked.

I truthfully don't think there's a shit's worth of difference between any of the AT mics from the 2020 up, from what I've read. Just bass rolloff and stuff, which I never use anyway. Probably should, I'm always removing bass from vocals after the fact. I was using a big russian condenser for a while, and even did a couple small mods to open it up a bit, but I have to say that the AT pisses all over it.

My coffee is indeed delicious, if I may take a moment to irritatingly praise myself. I will be chugging it once again in 10 short hours. :)

OT EDIT: Have you had coffee at Four Barrel? Is there anything else good springing up in SF now? I read that Ritual has built a giant roasting cathedral. When I win the Yerba Buena dream house I'm going to come own that town.

Pretty good day...won $1000 in the Yerba Buena thing, and rough-mixed yet another coco classic.

Rollin'

I don't believe it, I think I'm going to shit out an entire album this year. Luvz U, Ableton.

Well, it's definitely more focused than anything I've done for the past 15 years. It's feelin' pretty good. Thanks for another round of encouraging words. :)
