[Dubstep] Looking for a hug

Post by som » Fri Jan 27, 2012 11:06 pm

Just kidding - as always looking for feedback. Any comments on mixing and mastering? The levels and overall eq'ing?

Very trancy and lots of filter magic going on - but this is nothing special for this style.

Hey guys, no comments? Ok, here are some more precise questions:

1. I tried t leave a lot of dynamic headroom, at least 9 db. Therefore the track is not so "loud" as usual, but the transients are much cleaner. Your opinion?

2. Do you think all sounds are clearly seperated. After hearing the track over and over again, i think it lacks a second opinion.

3. Tricky: When using extreme filter movement, you always encounter level fluctuation? How do you tackle that? I used a very slow compressor, but I am not very happy with the result. Any suggestions - beside using volume automation *brrrr*

Alright som, I'll bite.

1. I think your mix is fairly balanced, some of those high filtered parts sound a bit harsh to me. And it is kind of flat. It still sounds like it is compressed a lot, other than a few spikes in volume (which I would try to attenuate, but still try to make them sound powerful). Also, the parts where there are no drums are considerably louder than the parts where there are drums. Typically, you would want this the other way around. Mix around your drums so that when the drop comes, the song is sounding at its fullest and loudest.

2. The sounds do sound fairly separated. Nothing really stands out though, maybe decide what you want to be the "main sound" and give it a bit more presence or bite.

3. Yes, this is a problem. The big way to avoid this is to turn your resonance down. You could put a limiter on the track, if you are doing crazy blippy filter sweeps than the quality of your dynamics is generally not a main concern, so limiting this particular sound harshly shouldn't be a problem. I am thinking of those hard panned filtery bits here.

Your drums lack some clarity, as does the mix in general. BUT. its not bad, it is pretty balanced like I said before. Hope this helps, I meant it all to be constructive. I didn't say many positive things but there are things to be said! I am just tired of writing lol.

Cheers.

Now be so kind and check out my shit on the link your music section too please ; )

for a track with a lot of 'dynamic range' I dont feel the dynamics that much. When the drop comes in I want to feel the kick and bass just punch me in the face. Otherwise I thought it was pretty well done.
