Epoch's Sound Diary (52 Tracks in a year)

Post by Mynameisepoch » Tue Nov 20, 2012 4:36 pm

Hello Ableton users!
I'm just a kid who likes to make bedroom music, (house, progressive, anything really, genres are a horrible way to describe someone's music).
I've been producing (more like playing and learning) with a few daws, mainly Ableton, FL Studio, and Reason, and i've decided i wanted to track my progress in the quality of my tracks, plus, i want to be more productive and moved to work more on music, so with that said, i introduce the start of my sound diary!
I will be uploading a track (1 minute-5 minutes) a week, every monday. Now, i've only been "producing" for a year and a half, so don't expect my music to be anything more than an experiment. (I do take music seriously though, and can only one day dream of making my music a career).
I started this off 10/22/2012 with a track titled "Frenchie" (Originally posted on IDMforums)

http://soundcloud.com/ohyouepoch/frenchie

I will be added all the songs to this original post, instead of making a new comment every time. (Drowning all future tracks)
Let the progress begin! (Oh and please, PLEASE, feel free to comment, wether it's good or bad, on my tracks, i appreciate all forms of criticism.)

PS- I've been told the people are nicer over here, so i decided to check it out, sorry that my first post is something advertising my music.
I look forward to hearing what you guys think, and also hearing the stuff you guys throw out, so yeah, my name is Epoch, nice to meet you guys :)

that'd a good idea, and quite brave in a way.

I'm in the middle of trying something similar myself, except I'm trying to write a song every day (so far 24 songs in the past 28 days) except I've run out of soundcloud space so I'm uploading them to youtube which has no limits. The quality is variable, to say the least (and it's not easy singing a song well when you were still scribbling the lyrics down 30 seconds ago). Because of Live's speedy workflow, I can get these songs down almost without thinking of how I'm recording things.

re: 'Frenchie' - it's not my style of music really, but I liked the punchy sound (mastered yourself?) and the nice use of the chopped sample (liked the intro) , good little production tweaks here and there...

Thanks! I'm pretty proud of that one!
I really don't know much about mastering, i'm trying to learn it a bit, but i am the only one who works on these tracks, i don't send them off or anything.

just gave 'Helion' a listen, I liked the syncopations, leaving the first beat 'empty' really sets up an interesting groove. nice meaty sounds too. good work :-)

Love the most recent one; would like to hear it evolve a little more.
Also, nice job with the Lone resampling :)

Great idea keeping yourself committed to releasing a track every week. I, too, am in your same position, new-ish to production using the exact same DAWs you listed, doing it all on my own and learning along the way. I'm glad I found this Forum to be able to share with like minds to help our music evolve.

I've listened to a few of your tracks, "Helion", "Caffiene", and "Frenchie" and I like your ideas! I really like the intros to both Helion and Caffiene. I can definitely hear your productions evolving. I do believe, however, that some percussion layers would add some depth to your tracks. Even an occasional beat repeat effect would throw in a rhythmic variation that would further draw in the listener (I just recently watched a nice YouTube video explaining all the ins and outs of the effect http://youtu.be/btU2G4pYyLY).

I'm curious as to the samples you are using, and how you are gating some of the samples? I haven't quite locked that down yet, but I think it's got a great sound. Anyways, keep up the good work, and good luck in your sound diary!

The samples i use i mention in the soundcloud description, most of the songs i use no samples at all besides the vengeance drums (kicks, claps, snares, etc.)
