2nd Single Made on Ableton (& big challenges)

Post by luckykat » Sun Feb 21, 2021 6:53 pm

Hey Ableton family,
I released my 2nd single 'Musical Chairs' which I made using Ableton. Check it out:
https://luckykat.bandcamp.com/track/mus ... hris-coxen

https://spoti.fi/37UuAVF

The biggest challenge I encountered was getting the vocal narration to sit in the mix as the synths & crescendo made the track much louder.
- Any suggestions on how I can make the vocals cut through a busy song?
- Anything that would improve the mix?

Thanks,
Dave

I have a feeling the music will stop at 3 minutes and 6 seconds.

Ha! Love that comment. I feel it might stop before 3mins 6secs
Thoughts on track? What can improve from a production standpoint?

The most important thing is to have a point of view and be confident. There is a current fad of mixing everything as loud as possible. That wasn't true 20 years ago, it won't be true 20 years from now. Having your own unique point of view helps to keep your music from sounding dated. Even when it comes to mixing. Just, be yourself.

So true. The loudness wars are here. I don't think it helps that every format makes your music sound different so if there is one where it is a little quiet, you are going to boost the level. Be myself. Always been that way. Thanks for tips & vote of confidence! 8)

Thanks amigo! Really appreciate the vote of confidence and your support on Soundcloud. Btw, if you like this, I think you will really like KRASH, that just launched:

I finally checked it out. I've had just enough vodka to where I thought I could read Korean writing in the roadway. Good on you for making a video. That's my next challenge.

I think it's really good. It's creative and exciting.

I've only been in production game for less than a year so every time I hear something I like I don't have much criticism. I have not found those sounds in Ableton nor do I know how to bring them out like you did.

Where do you get your sounds?

Keep up the good work!

I had a friend who helped me make the videos for Naughty Boys and Musical Chairs. He uses some software where you take templates but can customize them. The video for KRASH was one of the royalty free site for cool videos. I think it is in France. All videos plus the recent radio plays are here if interested:

Thanks for the really kind words! I went through an obsessive phase in October last year because I got covid and was in the house recovering for about 3 months so I learned Ableton. I went on every site looking for free samples, plugins and tutorials and put them all together. I have a music background (sound engineer and used to be in bands) but it's really my classical background which gives me the melodies and hooks. My goal is to create my own sound so if I use samples, I try and chop them up, reverse them, add FX/plugins/filters so they are unrecognizable.

Try Black Octopus, Ghosthack and Vengeance Sounds for samples & Bedroom Producer & Producer Feed for plugins. ALWAYS do trials of plugins BEFORE you buy anything.

I also just launched a new blog which will focus on key challenges I have encountered & how I overcome them. I want to help up & coming producers improve: https://medium.com/the-electronic-music-producer. My new single KRASH is out now (all links in signature to find it!). 8)

Be well! :)

What an incredible story!

I have a music back ground, too. However, I'm a tech dummy. I mean I don't know how to do the basic things you said like downloading samples and organizing them in my browser. It's making everything really hard because I don't know the language or how to phrase my questions.

You are well on your way to becoming a really good producer. I need help with the simple stuff and I'll be okay. I play classical guitar, too, but I write modern stuff.

But seriously, I am having trouble getting answers to my questions.

Thank you so much. I will check out your blog.

Nice Work!
