https://slowrobot.bandcamp.com/track/the-lake-door
first track completed fully within Ableton. rock with some electronic stuff here and there. had a bit of trouble getting some pitch editing done with the tempo changes, but managed to get it worked out.
it's about one of the most important relationships in my life, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. (also can be found on all streaming platforms, and soundcloud)
the light on the lake
we once knew something there
a silent reminder of where
ripples sent over an expanse
of criss-crossing lives
our reach never reached beyond
skip these stones
(tiny waves)
lows, and highs, and lows
(tiny waves)
and we're here
and it's something
I don't think we could've known
we'd lost sight of one another
but in the unknown of the night
we could always make our way
by the light of the lake door
skip these stones
(tiny waves)
lows, and highs, and lows
(tiny waves)
skip these stones
(tiny waves)
and we're here
and it's something
I don't think we could've known
we'd lost sight of one another
but in the unknown of the night
we could always make our way
by the light of the lake door
I've seen it go
and I know, and I know
you can't tame a ghost
and I know...
the light on the lake
we once knew something there
a silent reminder of where
ripples sent over an expanse
of criss-crossing lives
our reach never reached beyond

Hey man! This is really good, I really enjoyed this – the melody, drums and singing are all excellent and feel really cohesive.
Just wanted to say that!
Thanks for sharing,

Just tested this out as a come down tune from a good, long needed night out with some friends.
I have to say, I really did enjoy listening to this again.
Just wanted to say that, again.
Keep up the epic work man, I look forward to hearing more from you!

Best profile photo on Bandcamp btw!
Song is really cool but super quiet. Did you gain stage / optimize output levels?

yes, I did, but I optimized for Spotify playback, which I think recommends delivering at -6db—I used the same file I submitted to them, so I imagine that’s why it sounds quiet. I should’ve realized that. good to know—I’ll make sure to keep that in mind in the future.

-6dB is recommended for headroom before going into mastering. But what is your LUFS when submitting to spotify/streaming services.
Lmk if you need any help on the mastering front/optimizing sound for streaming. My SoundBetter profile is in my signature.

thanks! I think it’s more a matter of paying attention to what I’m submitting where.
as I recall, I targeted the recommended -14 LUFS, and then made sure there was -6 db headroom after that. I’m not sure what article I read to find that -6 db thing (when I did my album a year earlier, I think it was -2 db)—I just remember reading somewhere that they’d changed something and it was better to deliver with the additional headroom, at that point.
I’m glad you mentioned it, because I probably never would have realized I’d done that, otherwise.

Nice!
Just listening to the "becoming sane" album now, I like the variety you put into your arrangements!
