Increase the chance that someone will listen to your music.

Do you want to increase the chance that someone will listen to your music? If yes, then read on:

I was bored and just did a quick-and-dirty analysis of the statistics on the "Link Your Music" forum: I found a definite positive relationship between "number of views" and "number of replies" for posts in the forum. In plain english, this means that somebody is more likely to view your post if your replies are high, and vice versa. So, if you want to increase the chance that somebody will click to view your post (and, hopefully, download your music), then you need to somehow get the number of replies above zero. That said, no one will reply if they don't first view it; another case of "Did the chicken come before the egg?" In theory, increase one statistic and the other should follow; how you do that is up to you. Perhaps you could start the clicks (and cuts) by using more tempting "topic" headings...

How bored must I be? Time to get my life back!

How about sticking the genre in the title so people can sort through stuff when short of time? Naming the thread "Bowie with a laptop" will also create notice but is as cheeky as a cheeky monkey on a cheeky day with a particular reason for feeling cheeky. All in all the "Link Your music" is alot less active then i would of thought. Lot of people all talk and no trousers maybe? (This Probably should be in General??)

Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc

Read some of JNs columns about headlines, a fountain of knowledge about how to design headers/topics that pulls in the clicks.

http://www.useit.com/

One of the biggest (for me anyway) factors is if I know there is a direct link so I know I don't have to jump though hoops to listing to something, put that in the subject line like

"bla bla [Direct link]"

On the same level is that I know what genre it is, if I can't tell I useually don't click.

2nd is speed, if people have to wait more than 20 seconds to start listening they are useually gone.

So that would be:

"[GENRE] bla bla (Direct link, fast connection)"

Instant click if I'm looking to listen to something.

Judging by the response from Denmark, it looks like there really is a science to this 'clicks' caper.

p.s. this is one more 'reply' to test the theory...
