re the tracks by Used

Post by kimbo » Wed Dec 19, 2007 1:15 am

Hi there,

I just finished listening to U.S.E.D. and the tracks on myspace, and I liked what I head a lot, and since you wanted some feedback, here it is:

No Leading

- kill the sample that starts the track, for me this is production overkill...ever heard the saying 'keep it simple simon', usually, less is more, but of course there are exceptions to every rule; such as Betthoven's 9th Sympony or Bach' Fuge in Dmin...two rare instances were beauty can be found in complexity (my opinion anyway). Otherwise the production and mixing is ace.

- the vocal take is very reminiscent of the lead singer from Spandeu Ballet, but unfortunately, in some places not as strong. I think I detected some intonation problems there. I make sure my singer rehearses the parts I want thoroughly before rocking up to my studio. Try recording the vocal at different times of the day or night, and maybe that will help with the mood.
- lyrically I had difficulty getting into it. I think of lyrics as the most poignant statements in a traditional song, they need to not only match the mood of the piece, but they have to embellish the production at key points. So pick a topic or an issue, and use a little poetry, illiteration, metaphor to get across what it is that you are trying to say.

Otherwise, that one track showed me, that you could have a great song on your hands, and that as a band, that you are close to greatness.

Have you had any feedback from the industry on that?

Try to be personal, the record labels are right, one Depeche Mode is enough. If you add more of your band's personality into the tracks and shows, then it's a good thing.

Otherwise you are on a somewhat good commercial track, the eighties style music is just now doing a come-back. --Kent

I did them. I just don't have enough creativity sometimes like this. I love getting just a little inspiration from tracks like this. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks,
