What's wrong with midi clock?

Post by Damonv » Sat Jan 04, 2003 9:17 pm

I can't get Live to run either my Korg Electribe drum machine or Notron sequencer via midi clock correctly. Timing is erratic and drifts. Yet on the same computer Cubase clocks them perfectly. This means I have to run Live as a rewire slave in Cubase to be able to sync external equipment which I don't want to have to do! And I am not the only one. A friend can't clock his Akai MPC either on his own setup.

Ableton's can we sort this out. I have brought this up before with 1.5.2 and it still exists in version 2

Midi clock

Post by Alkanash » Sat Jan 04, 2003 10:13 pm

 Hi there Ableton...hi there Livers... I have the same problems.
I had them in 1.5 to. I tested the midiman midisport 2x2, the audiophile 2496 and the oxygen 8. On ALL mididevices i get the same sloppy results.
Live is NOT capable on my 2 systems(both XP pro, sercive pack2, 1,2 ghz) to maintain a stable midiclock.
And as you say the clock IS stable on Cubase SX and Logic and even the cheap techno toys.
Ableton...please check this midi timing stuff a second and third time..
Is it possible to deactivate midi time code for a start ? I need only the clock like most loop based users.
Please...i try to sync Live with a Micro modular right now, a 309 or another computer, i get nothing but drifts.
But i know you have a good team and will find the issue...
Trust in trance ;)

midiclock sync in doesn't work under mac (9.2.2 / osx 10.2.3

Post by vandeloow » Sun Jan 05, 2003 12:52 pm

yes, its definitly a bug from live. incoming midiclock doesn't funktion in live 1.5 and 2.01. it is not a midiinterface problem, because clock works in logic 5.5. but it is only a bug under mac os...under win 2000 i get incomin midicklock. there it works.

so i think, its a very old bug, but slavin' live to incomin' midiclock is a very basic feature from live. i wonder, why it doesn't work ?????

any suggestions ableton ??

thanxs

hi vandeloow

in Logic, the MT4 midiinterface works without problems.in Live...no way to synch live slave !
so i have changed to a midiman 4x4...it works,but not stable !?

it's right,midiclock is a very basic feature

Hello,
We have the same sync problems with live 1.5 and 2.0.1
Here is our setup:
RM1X (output : midi clock) ----> Midiman Thru 3x8
--->1) MIDISPORT 4x4 ----> Pismo 400 -----> Roland UA-30 (USB audio)
--->2) RME Hammerfall DSP on a Thinkpad A31 PC

RM1X is master
Thinkpad and Pismo are slaves

Pismo is a powerbook 400.
We've tried many variations. Our conclusion was that incoming midiclock in Live is really not sure (on mac and windows).
The only way to get something is to take live as master ... it ... works.
I find also that synchronisation maybe considered as a basic feature for Live. I'm afraid to see that this problem is discussed many times in the forum since the 1.5 then ... silence ... then back with this version ...

Hi there!

This is a weird happening as...with me midi clock sync always worked perfectly.
I have a live set up with a shitty Edirol UM-2 that i use only for sending
controllers to Live but I've tried to use it also as a sync box and it was working perfectly.
G4 pbook 867, OS9.2.2

as you may see, these problems are very hardware specific and
need to be tested (and maybe solved) individually for each configuration.
Could everyone of you who has a problem with either Live as midiclockslave
or Live as master please drop me a mail (mailto:mueller@ableton.com)
with the following info ?

- using Live as Slave or Master ? what is the other Master/Slave ?
- Computers Cpu and additional HardwareInfo
- OS
- MidiInterface
- AudioInterface
- works fine with the same setup with other soft ?
- short description of the problem :
is it alway reproduceable or does it only happen under certain
circumstances (high cpu usage/running on WordClock ...) ?

then I will test each configuration and try to find out what the problem
exactly is.

Midi CLock

Post by Alkanash » Mon Jan 13, 2003 2:45 pm

Well..i found new problems.
I synced One PC to another and drive the midi clock with Cubases SX.
When i change the tempo on the master live will make a very strange sound while changing the tempo.
This was not there on 1.52

Alkanash :
you are running Live as slave ?
How big is the audiolatency on the slave ? Have you tried to in/decrease the audiolatency ? Are you using Asio or DirectSound ? Is Live out of sync after that or is it just producing this strange sound and runs then normally again ? Does this happen with all warpmodes ?

Hi blaster,

like Eduard was mentioned before, please send him a message with the wished information.
I can really understand how bad it is if the software doesn't work like expected but something like "AND NOT WORK" doesn't help us to find the problem and the solution, because it could mean everything.

regards,
Alex

I have just replied to Eduard. With my set up, Laptop, M-Audio USB Quattro sound card, it appears the problem is with the loop switch. If I run in session or arranger without loop activated then it works fine. As soon as loop is activated it drifts out completely. Obviously no need for loop activation in session mode but essential in arranger.

Could this also have something to do with the Rewire missing beat problem at the beginning of the bar when it loops round?

I've got midi clock problems too!!!

Post by homerjsim » Wed Jan 15, 2003 7:51 pm

Hi
Me too - I'm trying to use it as a master, and the slave (Lexicon JamMan) drifts off (usually slower)...

just the facts:
.....Windows98 (Sony 450 Mhz laptop)
.....Bad with both 1.5 and 2.0
.....Bad with both Oxygen8 as midi interface (USB) and old midiman serial midi nterface
.....If I slave Logic to it and set Live's tempo to say, 127, the tempo display in Logic swings wildly back and forth with values like 126.234, 127.136, etc....

If anybody's left in (probably rainy) Berlin and not out by the pool in LA, please look into it!!!

(it's almost enough to make me use one of those unhappy "Emoticons"!)
