What is up with Ableton??? And will this be fixed in L8??

Hey subfubk,

read down the posts,

I am only using 30% of my total processing power on an Octocore mac, that's less than 3 of the 8 precessors.

I know it can do it all in real time, wicked, I am using it as a studio tool cos it's so good for writing with.

The live meter is reading 60% my main system circa 30%.

I guess I could rewire 2 versions of live together perhaps, anyone do this effectively?

I am not getting much of a performance increase from my Core 2 Duo macbook. .

Basically there's no point in getting a octocore cos ableton craps out with it in the same way as a core 2 duo or quadcore.



I really hope live 8 sorts this out!

That is an interesting statement. I just spent a few minutes googling for, this article I read somewhere, a very interesting article on multi-core machines, and todays software.

I totally can't find the article, but I'm under this impression, and I guess I might have this information misconstrued, because whenever I read it, it was indeed a while ago.

Software needs to be written for parallel computing. Software at the current moment in time, is not optimized for this style of processing. Especially software in the consumer market. I'm sure military systems, and business systems are quite different.

You wont get much of a performance boost, using more than two cores. The software is just limited, by its current architecture, in that way.

It will change, as the technology changes. IMHO, don't hold your breath if your looking for a Live 8 fix. IMHO, you can't really blame this on Ableton either.

I wish I could find the article. The article gave a great insight into, the uselessness of multi-core machines, in the consumer market.

Two cores, will give you a performance boost over one. Four cores, eight cores, wont give you that much, if any, of a performance boost over two.*




*That indeed was the jist of the article. Like I said, I read that article, somewhere, sometime ago. I might have this info a little misconstrued.

No worries.

Am thinking that re-wire might be a kludgy fix, although I reckon it's the sends that in part are doing me in. . .

Got a fair few sends for each track with Altiverb -> Amplitube (2 racked so stereo) -> Soundtoys Delay then possibly something else like a chorus

So getting some lovely dub fx chains going on but they killing my machine (and not really freezable either

I wonder if rewire then something like external instruments then soundflower might work. . .
