Best bang for your buck monitors

I remember when I was younger $400 for monitors was a sizable investment, I'm older now and have Adam A7s, I can afford to spend over $1k for monitors. the fun part of learning all this audio crap is knowing what's good and bad and knowing where to draw the line. also it's a world wide open forum, there are all kinds of people on here.

I learned my lesson wasting money on cheaper stuff one too many times. I was eager to get my hands on (insert type of gear) and was willing to sacrifice quality for immediacy.

immediacy also comes with a learning experience so don't disregard that. If he's mixing on headphones then I say that getting a $300-$500 pair of powered monitors is going to be a great upgrade.

I use these and I quite like them. They sound boring in a good way. Nothing is hyped.

Yamaha HS80M or HS50M ....

The Adam A7 are great, when I compared them to the HS80M I like the yamaha better because higher freq sound slightly aggressive with the A7s, but when it comes to lower freq the A7 (with their 6,5" speaker compared to the 8" speaker of the HS80M) are a little more responsive.

Had no chance to test the HS50M yet. For electronic music I would prefer Adam, for more acoustic music the HS80M. (We were a bunch of people, also unrelated people and we all agreed on that )

Of course you mileage may vary

Buy once and buy well..

I really streched myself and bought Adam A7's.. They are fantastic monitors and the support at Adam is very good also should you need them..

I listened to KRK RP5's and thought that they sounded pretty good on their own.. However compared to the Adams, the KRK's were not in the same leauge..

It really depends on how serious you are in your music making and how much you can 'stretch' yourself to accomodate your demands for the levels that you want to achieve..

Well, I've priced out a PA system w/ 2 monitors, 2 cabinets, a mixer and some cables for about $800, with this at least I'll be able to play in small clubs around town as well.

I also have my eye on adding a sub and about $500 worth of sound activated lights. Fuck clubs man, I can take this shit ANYWHERE!

I personally love the Yamaha HS50M, nice uncolored sound, and everything really sounds good on every speaker I try if I manage to make it sound good on the yamahas. And did I mention they are cheap for a pair?
If you want more low end you should invest in the HS80m's they are cheap as well, and I have tried them too!
But that's just my taste in monitors.

how would you compare the HS80M with the HS50M ... I like the HS80s except for the bass. it is not a catastrophe, but, you know, to me the attacks in the bass are a bit too slow.

No, obviously the HS50 will have less bass, but how do the behave in terms of the attacks?

I never had any problems in the bass, so not sure what you mean
But the HS80's obviously has more bass and it's just a bigger sound in my ears.
But I like mixing through the HS50's and especially because of the low bass, I like to keep things simple sound-wise.

I really like my Genelec 8020 monitors. They're EUR300,-/piece. And they're worth it.

Is that $300 for a pair? Then I'd say Behringer or Samson. Used monitors may be a good idea, but not necessarily. Monitors in the bottom segment are a lot better today than just three or four years ago.

For about $300 you can get the KRK Rockit 5". I use them and like them a lot, money well spent in my opinion.

They kick the crap out of my old NS-10s. When I heard some bottom end for the first time from the KRKs, I was hooked.
