I carry round my iMac everywhere, great for Starbucks. You think this makes me look pretentious? Really?
What a typically mac owner pretentious thing to say. As i said I own a Macbook, awesome little computer, but mac owners are invariably cockwhips
Either you're double-bluffing my bluff (iMac) or you're none too bright.

But seeing as I think you think you're quite smart, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt :)

http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

Quite a useful little site.

Refurbed is a great way to go...!!! Check with your Bank as I'm RBS and a got a premium account for £10 a month which means any electrical goods purchased with an RBS card automatically gets a manufacturerd extended warranty of 2 years including my Imac, same as apple care. Plus i get loads of other benefits with the Account, Breakdown cover, Travel insurance ETC ETC, just a thought from your friendly neighbourhood ex banker!

What do I need to know concerning operating system/Ableton compatability?

Is refurbished the way to go?
Is apple care a must?
Is Logic the bomb?

Thanks,
B.
No reason not to get a refurb, our last 2 have been refurbs. You take a chance of getting a lemon whether you buy new or refurb, so why not save some money.

I'd get Apple Care were I you. The monitor on the wifes IMac (a refurb) went up when it was 15 months old, 3 months out of warranty. They wanted $800 to fix the monitor so we just ended up hooking a dell 2209WA up to it. Decent little monitor for what we paid and a better display then what was in the iMac for sure, but yeah.

I'd get the apple care, shit does happen, it's just an annoyance when it happens in warranty, it really sucks when it happens a few weeks out of warranty.

Don't know what to tell you about logic. Try it out for yourself and see if it is what you are looking for.

If going for a ref. model -
make sure the hd is working at full capacity, check the cd/dvd drive, check all available ports [with devices]

Apple Logic Pro is a dedicated Mac Application

Makes me think...

I remember, just 10 years ago, whole days spent sitting in or outside of smoke filled cafe's hopped up on too much espresso, playing chess, talking about politics, society, art and music.

It was fun. Our favorite coffee shop used to be in an old converted horse stable on the water in downtown Baltimore, they are still in business but they've moved to a nicer spot and went corporate. A lot of the smaller shops just closed down. There are still a couple of decent spots but it's all around just a different experience today.

Seems like Starbucks really killed coffee shop culture.

When i got my mac i bought logic. And to be honest imo its very long winded software. To me it is far from logic but on a positive note its plugins and sounds are awesome
i much prefer cubase to logic
but hey they all basically do the same thing right

Why? your reasons?
Its nothing compared to Live.
what a whole lot of rubbish, it's different. period.

the OP, should check 'em both out himself... if he can...

if you want to mainly write / create music with a computer or performing your computer made/generated music live, then live is absolute fantastic... yes, but saying Logic or other Linear sequencers for that matter are nothing compared to Live is just plain immature.

Me giving my opinion that Live is a better piece of software is immature?

he asked for a reason and you simply answered it's better... without saying what makes it better.

well, i might misunderstood you...

but live is not better, it's different.

and other DAWs have many aspects that are certainly better then in live...

the OP needs to figure out first what he needs... and want's to accomplish... don't you reckon?

i just don't think that it's a good idea to suggest someone buying a hammer if he might wants to use screws all the time...

btw i agree that Live is awesome...

but it's just not perfect for everybody and everybody's needs... that's all.
