Funky ass music! (recommendations needed)
Funky ass music! (recommendations needed)
Hey guys!
I've just been booked for my biggest gig yet, 500-600 people for 5-6 hours.
They idea is that, instead of hiring multiple djs, I'm supposed to being play some lounge, then slowly warm up the crowd,
before I absolutely kill it at the end! In Denmark we have a proud tradition of being a bunch of crowdpleasers, which means I've gotta play some major hits (we're talking Freestyler, Justin, YMCA, Britney etc. etc. )
But something which scares me just a tiny bit, is that I might not have enough music for the whole evening, and I'd like your help here.
I'll post some tracks in the different "sections" of my mix, and I love if you could add some recommendations.
Starting out:
Minilogue
The Streets
A bit of the more down-tempo The Knife
The streets
Röyksopp
and maybe some Moby or even Battles.
--
Could you recommend me some tracks here?
Something sweet, but still danceable for the drunk ones
Then slowly I'll add my more party-oriented tracks:
Trentemøller
Digitalism
Justice
Deadmau5
Basement Jaxx
And What Am I Fighting for? LA Priest remix
---
Do you have any recs. here?
It shouldn't be too hardcore, so no hardcore dubstep or hardstyle allow
------
I'd love some inspiration for new sweet party tracks, so post away!
Cheers,
Fred

For the party tracks, check out:
Armand Van Helden
DJ Sneak
Daft Punk
Thomas Bangalter
Also, I know it sounds stupid, but if you are playing diverse music for mainstream crowds, I would get some compilations of dance classics - IE: Best of 90's Dance, etc. I am not saying play super cheesy stuff (but you should if the crowd wants it) but I think it's important to have a lot of the standards for these kinds of gigs in case you get requests or if you get on a roll.

Thanks for the tips man
I've already got Armand and Daft punk on, so I'm secured.
I'll try my best to mix between the known and the unknown. Hopefully creating some sort of a mash-up in ableton.
But yeah, I'll look through some compilations. Just wanted some the abes recommendations

Also, I would recommend to have a few long but good songs or perhaps 10 minute mini-mixes ready so you can take a bathroom break and also stretch.
The toughest part about these long gigs for me is getting sore from standing in place for 6 hours. Go to the bathroom, stretch, shift positions, etc.

Re: Funky ass music! (recommendations needed)
cruise a bit around dancetracksdigital.com
they not only have your average boom tschik, boom tschik type of house, but a lot of funk with electronica, funky breaks, soul, etc.
good dance stuff on there. and not just for ketamine minimal lovers.

Chic 'Good Times', 'Le Freak', 'Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowser, Yowser, Yowser)', 'I Want Your Love' - although dated, always funky. Bernard Edwards was one of the funkiest bassists of all time. Nile Rodgers was a great producer and a decent guitarist. Nile and Bernie also produced Sister Sledge and Diana Ross 'Upside Down' and 'I'm Coming Out' among many other projects.

Agreed. Always been my standard pee/grab another drink/smoke break tune. And you still have an obscene amount of time left over after doing those things.Tone Deft wrote:"got to give it up" by Marvin Gaye, nice looooooong party song gives you a chance to go pee.contakt321 wrote:The toughest part about these long gigs for me is getting sore from standing in place for 6 hours. Also wouldn't be a party without Young MC - Bust a Move making a cameo in the set.
