I know this isn't a straightforward question to answer, but how much additional CPU load are you seeing with M4L running? And with Buffer Shuffler in particular, how much extra CPU resource does an instance of it demand?
I'm on a Vaio laptop, 2Ghz Core2Duo and 2GB RAM... but of course your system will be diiferent!

M4L devices are not very CPU efficient compared to native, VST or AU effects but CPU efficiency is not the only consideration when using a M4L effect. The Loop Shifter effect for instance is something that could only be achieved with M4L so in my mind is worth a few extra CPUs. There's a great video demo of Loop Shifter @ http://vimeo.com/8138349

I'm finding them quite reasonable in terms of cpu use.
