fun, as this statement is untrue. according to this statement, not even multi cores would be supported, or dual cores.. which is obviously untrue.

hyper threading does not have to be supported ever by an application. only by the OS, which schedules the threads to them. it's not like apps do that themselves, normally.

Hyperthreading on older intel cpus caused a lot of compatibility problems.

Then intel ditched the hyperthreading idea for a while, before bringing it back recently in the i7. The new implementation is much better and shouldn't cause any issues, but tech support has to err on the side of caution...

no it didn't lead to compatibility problems. it just ment, mainly for games, lower performance than disabling it. but no crashes, or something, or what ever. (i have live on a p4 with hyperthreading, it uses both cores, and has no stability issue).

I tink you might have things a little confused.
Your talking about physical cores.
Live most certainly does see all physical cores.
Hyper-threading, how ever, and as far as i understand it, is about virtual cores.
The application needs to be written to take advantage of any virtual cores.
A non aware application will run just fine on an i7 machine using all four physical cores
while the OS hosting it will still be able to see the four physical cores, plus the four virtual cores.

Could you run the ableton 8 live performance test on that i5-machine and post them here?
I got my i5 cpu already, but I could give it back if the i7 is really worth the extra money...

Do you really mean the i7 870? Not the i7 860?

Just got an idea:

I just thought about a way to get around the 4gig ram limitation issue of 32bit os... would it be possible to run ableton and vst plugins on two separate virtual machines with 4gigs ram each (only one quadcore machine w/ 8gigs ram running win7 64bit and two virtual 32bit-machines)? Do you think that would be possible or is that already part of win7 (older apps should be integrated seamlessly via virtual pc technology if I remember right)?

Apps that need time critical access to the hardware shouldnt be run in virtual machines. Youll get a massive performance hit that will far outweigh any benefits.

Seems like I shouldn't reply to different postings at once...

Has anyone tried the seamless integration of winxp software within win7? How does it perform?

No i havent purely because i havent had the time to get involved with that. But i need to get rebirth 338 2.01 running in win 7 somehow and although i found a way to get it install in win 7 it wont get past the intiall testing this computer for resources page on rebirth. So XP mode will have to be looked at a little bit later down the line.
win 7 64 ultimate

OK I'll do this sometime today - I'm stuck at home this morning due to heavy snow so nothing better to do at this moment, unless I decide to go sledging of course

Yeah I'd really appreciate getting the test results for this cpu with ableton... Did you overclock the i5? Seems to perform very well when oc'ed... even better than the i7 920.

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter % 21 - 27
2) Laptop/Desktop? Make/Model? Acer m7720
3) Operating System? Win 7 ultimate 64
4) Ableton Live version? 8.1.1
5) CPU Make, Model, and Speed? I7 920 2.66 not overclocked
6) Amount of Ram?6GB DDR3
7) Soundcard (and driver version if you know it)? M audio ozonics
8) Hard Disk Drive Speed (if you know)? Sata 2 7200
9) Number of playback tracks? 8

Interestingly the cpu meter on the desktop only ewver read 16% showing live isnt as other's have stated utilising all the cores. There are 8 on my machine 4 virtual ones and 4 physical i believe.

I have looked at overclocking my i7 but it looks pretty complex to me. Is it difficult / very time consuming ?
