That is just the limit within an Ableton Live 'groove' when applied to normal metronome. I am sure that if you really wanted you could set the metronome to half and then start grooving the 2's and 4's.. or even set it to a quarter (the 3's) or an eight of the tempo! (putting groove on every other downbeat).

The rule of thumb is what sounds good.. and, unless it is some kind of dub shiz, try to keep every other downbeat spot on.

Also, to make up for the kick being swung you would probably want to keep other percussion very tight.

Lastly, as an alternative to swinging your kick, you could always just give it a slightly different arrangement.. which is a near equivalent to swinging it except it would be within the expected 16th note grid.

Follow your self, learn from the rules and learn from breaking them :)

I can't believe somebody applied swing to a 4/4 bassdrum and thought there could be any difference.

When I read the OP I thought he was talking about breakbeats, and there it DOES make sense to have some swing on the bassdrum as well.

And yes it IS sometimes near to impossible to mix a track with a lot of swing and a straight one. Using a straight BD won't help in that case.

I've done garage tunes that are pretty much triplets, with the kick being swung and they get played out no problem. Depends on the genre/skill of the DJs really.

You should be swinging from a tree by a rope round your neck for even considering this :P

People that constantly challenge and experiment, diverging from the norm are those I admire.

So the people that are attempting to insult the original poster.. well, they really prove how naive the standard general population can be when their narrow-minded, antiquated beliefs are questioned :P

You could have your intros/outros only quarter notes.
